MY OUTLOOK EXPRESS ACCOUNT SETTINGS

I have three email accounts.   The first is with TPG:  mboesen@tpg.com.au

I also have an email account with the PCUG.  As applies to all PCUG members, this facility comes free with membership of the PCUG.  My email address for that is:  boesen@pcug.org.au

I have a third account with Gmail.

My Internet Service provider (ISP) is TPG (NOT PCUG).

Emails sent to boesen@pcug.org.au appear OK my email client (Outlook Express).  This happens because one of the "internet accounts" identified in my OE list of "accounts" specifies within its properties the email address of boesen@pcug.org.au  Its properties also specify that for that "account", the relevant server for incoming mail is a POP3 server named mailhost.pcug.org.au   Within Outlook Express I have labelled that account "PCUG" (but I could have used any label, including "wheelbarrow").

I can read such email OK.  However, for some time I have had this problem:   if I do a simple "Reply" to such an email, leaving the "From" email address as that specified in the Outlook Express's PCUG account's properties (namely boesen@pcug.org.au), the email does not get sent and I get an error message witgin OE..

In the properties for the Outlook Express's PCUG account, I specified the relevant server for outgoing mail as being a SMPT server named smtps.tip.net.au    (note that the "smpts" is NOT a mis-spelled "smpt").  Because of my lack of knowledge about these matters, it took me some time to twig to the fact that smtps.tip.net.au is the appropriate server name and that was part of my self-inflicted problem.  However, for a long time I did not have ALL the properties for the PCUG account specified correctly.   There is a PCUG article that provides information about how to set up things:  www.pcug.org.au/res-dsl/adsl_email_config.html   However I had trouble implementing the steps described (maybe I was just not reading that stuff closely enough).

After a bit of farnarkling, I now have all the properties set in a way that WORKS, although I have not implemented things exactly as described in the article above.

I have also assisted some other PCUG folk who have had the type of problem that I was having;  using my settings as a template, they have been able to overcome their problems too.

As a backup for my ageing memory I have put together a set of annotated screen clips of the settings for my Outlook Express's PCUG account.  I have also put together a set of clips for my Outlook Express's TPG account (some parts of which are simpler than is the case for the PCUG account).  Here they are:

1.  Settings for my Outlook Express's PCUG account

To get to the Outlook Express's PCUG account's properties, I open Outlook Express, then go to Tools/Accounts/Mail tab.  I then highlight the PCUG account and click Properties.  (If you do not already have an account there, then you could click Add and type in stuff along the lines of what I have shown below.)

After that, the tabs look like this:

This is the URL I refer to in the above pic:

www.pcug.org.au/res-dsl/adsl_email_config.html

At the end of all that, make sure to Apply and OK:

2.  Settings for my Outlook Express's TPG account

To get to the Outlook Express's TPG account's properties, I open Outlook Express, then go to Tools/Accounts/Mail tab.  I then highlight the TPG account and click Properties.  (If you do not already have an account there, you could then click Add and type in stuff alonng the lines of what I have shown below.)

At the end of all that, make sure to Apply and OK:

I hope this stuff may be of assistance to someone.

If you see any errors or omissions, or can advance my understanding, please send me an email.
