Meeting 12 December 2000

1. A nice morning for the last northside meeting. There were quite a lot of
points raised, so I will be brief.

2.Adele had problems with "Ninesamn take over". She was heartedly fed up with
the way that Ninesman had taken control of her IE browser and despite
resetting the "Home Page" in Tools->Options->General Ninesman kept intruding.

3. It was suggested that she delete the shortcut key that she was using to
start MSIE and make a new one.

4. On a similar vein, another member had been put through the hoops by Global
Freeway. Fortunately Charlie had been there and done that and got rid of it
by searching his directories for anything "Global Freewayish" and deleting
it. And yet another complained of Telstra's BigPond doing the same thing.

5. Geoff had a problem reading e-mail though he could get his PCUG pop3 stuff
from Hotmail. Geoff had written down the error message which said his Outlook
Express could not find mailhost.pcug.org.au:127.0.0.1 .This was an easy one,
in OE, Tools->Accounts->PCUG mail account->Servers and set the pop3 server to
mailhost.pcug.org.au Note, that lots of newish MS operating systems are
dropping through to 127.0.0.1 if it can't find the first one.

6. Allan advised that the Training Officer had information on a book called
"Grandparents Guide to the Internet" and thought that C&C could buy a copy.
It was decided to leave the matter with Charlie to work out with Marion.

7. On the subject of money, Charlie advised that there was no need to collect
any further contribution for the time being, and would review the matter in
March 01.

8. Easy cleaner and ME are not compatible. Some ensuing discussion on ME
indicated that there was not too many good points with it at the moment. It
shut down faster and it's the latest and greatest but lacks the drivers to
allow you to use your existing printers and modems etc (maybe)

9. Ken gave us a run down on the evaluation he had made between TransACT and
Telstra's ADSL. To cut a long story short;
   TransACT don't have a clue
If you want it now, go ADSL
and that is the way that Ken is heading.

10. And even when TransACT get a clue, it is unlikely they will match Telstra
for Internetty things. They seem to be more in the delivery of bandwidth for
home movies/televison. Maybe kate will fix things.

11. http://www.u3acanberra.org.au is up and running for those interested in
U3A matters. The prospectus shows some 80 courses, so please visit. Mike also
told of his woes in attempting to establish a mailing list via egroups,
http://www.egroups.com (I think) The problem he struck rested not with
e-groups, but the recipients who thought they were being spammed.

12. He is to review this problem, maybe run a u3a course :-).

13. You can read TIP newsgroups from Woop Woop if you like. Go to
http://www.tip.net.au/tipnews/ You will need login details which can be
obtained after reading the blurb.

14. Greg reported that while attempting to download a 4WD site, his AV
software leapt into action and warned him of a HTML infection coming on. He
stopped this activity but has been unable to resolve the issue as his mailer
wont let him mail the advice to Virus Headquarters. Perhaps after Xmas, we
will get an update on this.

15. Kevin wanted to know how to pick up just the sound on the TV channels.
Some discussion, it would seem that a scanner could do this, but probably the
cheapest route would be to buy a cheapie TV and just switch off the video
bit.

16. Jim had a problem with Direct CD, it worked but produced an error message
along the lines "driver memory error...." It was suggested that this type of
problem be solved by deleting the program, Control Panel->Add/remove programs
and then reinstall it. This is in fact the "generic" solution to most
problems and should be practiced till you can do it in your sleep.

17. "Come into my web said the spider to the fly", and that seemed to be a
good description of an ad which appears in a text box with the text partly
obscured but scroll bars available "to see all" One click, and it's a Gotcha.
Rotten things they are, and you can't get rid of them either.

18. Next Northside meeting will be 9 Jan 2001. Let me put that another way,
there will be NO meeting 26 Dec 00.

19. So as Chairman Ken said, Merry Xmas, and see you all next year.

Meeting closed at 20001212113430 ESST - or there abouts.
