A well attended meeting this morning, probably 30 or more, and an interesting one at that. First up, some notices; The C&C group will hold a Christmas lunch 3 Dec 1996 at the Canberra Yacht Club, gather between 12.15 and 12.30, it will be partly subsidised, and more details will come out later. If you haven't read it elsewhere, TIP will be off the air on this Saturday, 16 Nov, and probably Sunday as well. Be patient and don't forget the new number must be put in your dialler. Reading Off Line Ken Meadows described a program, UNMOZFED (is that right Ken?) which allows you to go back and read what you have hauled down in Netscape, OFF-LINE. There appears to be a number of programs that allow you to do this, WebWacker is another. However the Sydney Morning Herald didn't lodge in his cache and wondered why is this so. It appears that many pages now omit the date of creation or last modified from their pages, and this results in Netscape not caching it, however it is still cached on the TIP cache, and so you are likely to get an out of date SMH. To get the latest SMH you will have to try Reload, or Shift+Reload, this will tell the local server to go back to the SMH server and get the latest version. Report from Mike Dinn Mike lost his CMOS settings, and had a terrible time getting back into business. Quite a few other people in the group had been there and done that, so it is a matter OF WRITING DOWN YOUR CMOS SETTINGS, just in case it happens to you. Newer computers have an auto detect system, so it is not very important for these, and some hard disks were now sold with the relevant information printed on the outside. Specs for HDD can also be found on the internet. Derrick Boyd related how he lost his cmos, and rang Seagate's agent in Sydney. He was pleasantly surprised at the assistance given by the Sydney office, they even provided a booklet giving all Seagate HDD specs for free. Got Win95, well there is no built in way to print a directory listing, however, help is now at hand; see http://www.creativelement.com/win95ann/win95ann3.html Mike also put an extra 1Mb of RAM in his video card, and everything came to a screaming halt, so out with the extra memory and life is back to normal.....Read on, looks like extra memory can cause problems. Other Problems Someone bought an extra 2 megs of RAM for his HP3P printer and immediately got "out of memory errors". It was suggested that Page protection should be switched off, and Darrell Burkey, who has the same system and no problems offered to assist. A lady who has had a computer since March was having an awful time getting Corel3 to work, basically she had no references to guide her, there didn't appear to be anything in print to help her. The best solution came from Darrell Burkey who advised that the Group has a "How To" CD Rom for Corel3, and she would be welcome to borrow it. As for books, since Corel3 was a bit dated, it was thought that Academic Remainders or Revolution may have copies of Corel3 Dummy books or similar. Paul Thompson moved his computer a few feet, after which nothing worked. Then his HDD crashed, and for $30 extra, the dead 540 HDD was replaced with a 1.2Gb disk. Lots of problems and lots of suggestions, including returning the computer to its original position. Should be an interesting update on this one next meeting. Peter Watney wondered why in Telix, the M0 command switched of the modem noise, but in Genesis, it didn't. The immediate answer was that Genesis was overwriting the M0 command, but why was another question. This led to a discussion on how to edit the registry file, modem init string, but this seems to be fraught with danger, needing a clear mind, a strong heart and nerves of steel. Apparently the VFast Maestro init string in Win95 is wrong, causing many a fit of depression, it can be fixed though. Next meeting will be 26 Nov 1966, so till then Cheers Owen
