Here are the notes of the meeting today at which 41 people attended, two of whom for their first time. JimH ruled the unruly mob and I agreed to collate the notes. Below are the subject headers. 1.a. Lotus Smart Suite v.9 This has been released on the CD ROM June 2002 Australian PC User. With the smart suite is software that one can use and dictate into the microphone so that the text appears in Lotus Notes, an app that produces compatible with MS Word. -- TrevorF 1.b. Let's be friends - TrevorF. Trevor had received a message the subject of which said "Let's Be Friends". The text said nothing but there were two attachments. The first one had the extension .bat and the other had the extension .html. Seeing it looked rather suspicious I ran the normal virus scan through my HDD and it detected nothing untoward. JohnS said that it was most likely the Klez worm. I used to use AVG from Grisoft and kept the signatures up to date. I now use a different one called Kaspersky AntiVirus that came with PC User September issue. I chose that instead of the one called NOD because I thought it was a ridiculous name. Kaspersky Antivirus scanned and detected quite a few infected files which I then "cleaned". After that I found that my Forte Agent inbox showed that all were unreadable so I deleted them. This might be the reason that I received just a few messages from those who attended C&C. Nevertheless, I've posted what I had received below: 2. A laptop fails to start Windows Kerry, a newby to the group, brought along his no-go laptop. It goes into a loop at startup before entering Windows. It will boot with a boot floppy into the a:drive; but cannot recognise the C drive. John S., Rod B and Merv had a look. Perhaps the C drive connecting pins have imperfect contact. Perhaps the C drive is cactus. Kerry wants to rescue his emails on the hard drive. He has taken advice to take the machine to L & S to see if they can recover his data. He will then try to work out what to do next - possibly move to a new desktop system. The laptop is more than 5 years old, a W95 system and would probably not be reliable enough for him to use as his main computer. Kerry is very grateful for all the help he received form cnc experts. He was most impressed with the level of knowledge and wisdom around the table. 3.JohnS 3.a. After 18 plus months of anticipation, JohnS has finally joined Transact and (temporally) WebOne. Installation went well and everything is working fine. Many small items are worth noting, but instead of boring the meeting, JohnS has undertaken to write YATA (Yet Another TransAct Article) for 16 -Bits. 3.b. Who gives out snail mail addresses? Received a 2 CD set for "Casino Atlantis On-line" via snail mail from Belgium ('A' Priority mail). This virtual casino is situated in the Bahamas. No way will I install these '16 casino games'. 3.c. Passed out the usual Web database and mailing lists for update. 4. Saving e-mail messages (as a group) to disk (Netscape) - TedT 5. Canon bits at Harvey Norm - MikeD Mike Dinn had a print head failure on two Canon printers - 6200 and S450. Harvey Norman have 10% off Canon items at the moment, but if you're lucky you might be able to get their Seniors discount as well - about another 5% 6. XP sloooow shutdown - Derek 7. Download accelerator for dialup - Charlie 8. Playing games on Internet - Ann 9. External CD ROM writers - PeterJ 10. Zone Alarm - Graham ============ Probably because of my experience with the Klez worm I've failed to see any other responses. Regards, Trevor -*"*-.,,.-*"*-.,,.-*"*-.,,.-*"*-.,,.-*"*- My wife will buy anything marked down. Last year she bought an escalator. -- Rodney Dangerfield****************************************************** Coffee & Chat Page, inluding archives of past meetings http://www.pcug.org.au/pcug/candc/ ******************************************************
