Coffee & Chat notes from the North side of Canberra ACT. For Tuesday 13/6/2000 A few seats were empty at the meeting. Rod S offered to take the notes Ted opened the meeting at 10.00 am. The meeting was advised that TIP does not have a firewall. See south side notes of Coffee and Chat. New attendee Ron was introduced - he is amazed at what he has been able to do with his computer. South Side C&C is almost fully operational - on the alternate Tuesday at the Irish Club. Funds are sufficient that a donation was made to the Cancer Society. It was suggested the C&C group may buy a copy of Adobe Acrobat for the user of the whole of PCUG - we will wait until after the June PCUG meeting - by Adobe. 1. www.knees.com Ted A site offering help on dodgy knees. There are others covering other parts of the anatomy. It was suggested everyone bring details of their favourite medical site. 2. Lost tool bar in Eudora Pro Phil It was suggested a load of the patch for version 4.3 would solve the problem. One should be a registered user - a serial number must be quoted to get the patch. 3. Calendar mix up in 16Bits Margaret Already brought to the attention of the appropriate person and in e-mail. 4. www.winzip.com Jeff Jeff mentioned that version 8 seems to have a number of extra goodies, and is still easier to use. Worth changing from version 7. He also gave some details of his problems compiling Fortran in Korea. Agreed probable cause was the need for double characters and Windows inability to handle these properly. Compiled properly on a 486 machine. Another member mentioned that he has similar problems (and solution) with the Thai language. Jeff also asked for volunteers to help the Belconnen Library Internet (and PC use in general) tutorial system. 5. Errant DLLs Rod An ongoing problem but still no solution. It may be possible to create a dummy DLL - must have zero response and be executable. Also suggested System Information (under Accessories etc) in Win98 may help. Sometimes a program which is only incompatible when set to start up on booting the computer can be removed from Start up and the DLL errors cease. As a side issue - to bypass automatic start of CDs hold down the Shift key when it is first put in the machine. 6. Word 97 Ken His version has recently started loading any existing .DOC file with the default name Document1. Suggested there may still be a ~name.TMP file in the MyDocument folder. It is normally deleted as soon as the file is saved. Can also load SR1 and SR2 and/or Repair the existing Word97 program. 7. Netspy Trojan Charlie Reported as an example of the perceived difficulty of Norton's Antivirus catching all 'nasties' compared to Innoculate, and also the need for occasional complete checks of the computer in case a 'nasty' which was not found when it was first loaded is now recognisable by the updated Anti Virus program. 8. Maintaining Win98 Jim These are notes put together by Chess and Gordon and are held in the PCUG web site. Recommended as being very good. 9. Monitor problems Bob These are intermittent variations of incomplete starts with starting his computer. He has tried various combinations of Monitor and Video card. After discussion it was thought the actual problem may be caused by a faulty power supply. 10. No serial port Keith He thought there was no port on his new computer. Advice is that there are two COM chips but no cables and sockets out to the backplate. Mike suggested the C&C group buy a copy of the software to carry out low level diagnostics. No final decision was arrived at. 11. CDRom eject switch Trevor He is unable to get the CDRom device to open so as to put in a CDRom, or to eject one already in the machine. Same problem with two identical machines. Suggested it may be a warranty problem for the supplier. Bob advised he is leaving Canberra after 32 years to live at Port Fairy. Thanked the group for the entertainments and information he has received. Notes received on the day!
