Meeting 15 August 1995

For those of you who dial a few hundred times to try and
get on the Internet, a preety sight greeted those who attended
this mornings Coffee and Chat. There outside the building, was a
massive trench digger, doing the preparatory work for the laying
of the new cables. It was a fine day for it and we all hope that
they get the work done as quickly as possible.

Gloria opened the meeting with apologies, and welcomed a
new member, Anne Warrener( excuse spelling) who was into Corel
Draw to help her with her decorating business. With such fine
weather, Gloria suggests that plan on a picnic at Telopea Park
after the meeting 12 Sep 95.

Kryn Versteeg gave us a talk on his computing interests.
He had an Amiga 500 used exclusively for interacting with his
videos, and on retirement upgraded to a IBM type machine, and
found there was a whole new ball game with it. He was learning as
fast as he could and hoped to have his video titling etc programs
running off the new machine shortly.
He also gave us a rundown on a dutch newspaper report on
using the Internet for voice and radio. Some discussion followed,
apparently the radio side is restricted to VOA and Deutsche Welle,
it is not real time, but rather a playback of broadcast programs.

Algis Kabaila has provided a version 2.08A Internet
installation kit. The "A" version is a barebones kit with
Winsock, E-mail, News, and FTP. It is self installing and
therefore suitable to those unsure of installing such a suite of
programs. It comes with a very detailed list of instructions to
initialise the programs to your particular requirements, like
Comms ports, userid, etc.
Al has a "B" version also which, installing over the "A"
version will give all the other features, like Netscape. It was
not quite sure how people would access these kits, although for
beginners, they would probably be able to pick them up from the
PCUG Centre, and hopefully, they would be on the BBS later.

Emil Joseph had a MAC formatted disk, and wanted to
extract a small file. Apparently there are "plenty" of conversion
programs around, Exchange was mentioned, and if all else fails,
it was suggested he could approach Logical Solutions for a
solution.

Wolf Lieske raised the subject of Ramdoubler and MagnaRam.
How good were they etc? Ken Meadows mentioned that he had
bought the last one from the Software Shop for $109 as a PCUG
member, a very good discount, however he had not psyched it out
but promised to give a full report at the next meeting.

Peter Hodge handed out a 60 page document on genealogy
resources. There was a tremendous lot of information in it and he
hoped to post it to the BBS.

Another member sought help in upgrading his computer, an
Osborne. Again, considerable discussion flowed, particularly on
the matter of warranties. In the end, the general consensus was
that an approach to the advertisers in SixteenBits should be made
for quotes on supply and installation of the additional hard
disk.

Ken Meadows upgraded to BW 2.2.
Has anyone else done this was his cry, and he then spent some
time on describing his failure in upgrading his registration to
the 2.2 version. Anyone out there that knows about this please
contact Ken Meadows at 3:620/243

Greg O'Regan described his fight for survival against a
virus, he lost and to cut a long story short, had to start all
over again. He has got everything but a MATSURA true type font.
Although this was a Japanese brush stroke font, it passed off
real well as a Gaelic script, and he was keen to get back to
doing his Irish newsletter. Some pointers were given to Greg as
to where he might look. He also stated that F-PROT, an anti virus
program of the BBS is really good.

Just before the meeting ended there was some discussion
on the backup machine. It would appear to be too complex, and
Gloria thought that the group may assist the PCUG committee in
other aspects of the PCUG running.

When I left the Telcom diggers were having lunch.
THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND.
Oh well, at least a start has been made!

 Cheers Owen
