Minutes of the Meeting held 17 July 2001 The following items were discussed: 1. Memory Test x3 - Ted T 2. Slow return of screen after screensaver - Ted T In relation to the two above items, Ted T said that after having additional RAM put on his computer the memory test at start up ran three times instead of once and that his monitor screen was very slow to come on after the screen saver had operated. It was suggested that the CMOS settings had been altered and that they would need to be reset. With the help of Tony Salvage I changed the two settings and everything has returned to normal. 3. Multiple monitors - Emil Windows 98 supports several monitors at once. Some software, for example, Flight Simulator, makes use of that facility. Emil enquired on behalf a friend, whether it possible it is possible that one monitor is fed off an AGP video card, and another off a PCI video card. An employee of a well-known dealer is that is not possible. A related question was whether the user can determine which monitor is the "primary monitor". It was suggested that the answer to question one is "maybe", and to the other "yes". Roger suggested a search in the Flight simulator newsgroups may yield the answers. 4. SPAM, ME, Norton Utilities - Jeff ---quote Jeff reports: 1. A relative has a problem sending us e-mail from Beijing, China. For our pcug address she gets a return from TIP "because of Spam". Suggestions were given about how this blocking could be avoided, though of course no one wants Spam, and I have put a query into TIP-Help 2. For members who have the latest PCUser magazine (for August) I reported that I had trouble finding some of the items on the magazine's CD from its index but had found lots of goodies by using Windows Explorer to see contents of the disk. For example I am impressed by a 26 page booklet about Internet provided by compguidepart3.doc which is not even mentioned in the magazine. It is in the feature/compguide folder. I also showed a copy of this article printed using the 2 pages per sheet printing option so that I had a good readable version of the 26 pages on 13 sheets of A4 paper. This zoom option for printing is a new feature that has come with WORD 2000. The option is not seen by using a keyboard or icon short cut to print. Rather it is necessary to click File/Print and choose the number of pages per sheet from the zoom option on the Print page, that is 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 pages per sheet! 3. I suggested that our CnC meetings would be improved if members gave reasons or a basis for their comments, especially when denigrating something like Window Me or Norton Utilities with an authoritative sounding "Don't use it". Some who responded by saying that they had learnt such things at our meetings did not understand my motive with this comment. My point was that reasons have not always been given at meetings and this may have misled people unnecessarily. For example I am pleased with Me and Norton Utilities, and would recommend both except for particular situations as when a driver not included with Me is required for an superseded piece of equipment or when an appropriate version of Norton's has not been obtained for the users version of Windows. ----unquote 5. CD Read/Write IDE cable configuration - MikeD 6. "Cannot find Mailhost" - Derek Owen writes: ---quote If applicable The mailserver for POP3 (receiving) and SMTP (sending) is mailhost.pcug.org.au If you are using Outlook Express, go to Tools->Accounts and select your "TIP mail account. Then select the server tab and ensure the above information is entered correctly. Often, when failing to make a connection due to the line dropping out, the servers reset to the localhost address 127.0.0.1 and thus need reconfiguring ----unquote 7. TIP Web space - John S 8.
