MervC Not resolved yet. JohnS said he was game send him a copy. 3) Win98-printout. BobS Try Iview, PritKey 2000 or Irfanview. Subject: Re: WINDOWS 98 Maintenance Manual Email of 12/10/00 Date: Sunday, 22 October 2000 2:20 PM After a discussion at C & C Northside yesterday I again tried to read the win98wd7.zip attachment. KenM had opened his but couldn't remember how! So I tried the following; 1.. Downloaded and installed the current winzip32 from www.winzip.com. 2.. Saved attachment to disk at C:\MSOffice\Winword\PCUG (win98wd7.zip 5,098KB) 3.. Used Win Zip Wizard to unzip win98wd7.zip, and saved to C:\unzipped\win98wd7 (48,146KB) 4.. Double clicked C:\unzipped\win98wd7, and Word started to open with message "word is converting to win98wd7.doc", but 5.. Opening stopped with dropdown message "Word cannot open the document (C:\unzipped\win98wd7\win98wd7.doc)" Since then I have tried many permutations and combinations without success, but as long as the file will not open I cannot SAVE AS "html" as recommended. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, BobS 4) A mix KenM Chess Doc file, printout of his Notes. Laser Brand 80 Minute blank CD's $1.00 each in a thin case ($20.00 for 20) Joke on Microsoft. I mentioned three items. At the last Computer Fair I bought a packet of Laser brand 20 CD Recordable 80min 700Mb discs for $20. They were in a jewel case which was half the thickness of the usual case, the normal back portion being replaced by the piece on which the CD sat. This appeared to be just as sturdy as the ordinary case but there was no end on which to place a title. It was simple to make a template which could hold the title and because the case was only half a thick, when stored in a spring loaded rack, the title could be read. I showed a printout of Chess's and Gordon's remedial Windows 98. I found I had several versions of this on my computer and while one version would not display or print with graphics the other could. The full version was a DOC file the other was a HTM file, each appeared to be different. The third item was a joke which I think I had seen before but as it has appeared in a newsgroup that morning thought worth repeating. Ken. 5) Internet Explorer- needs Update, tried Modem. It wants to download "MS virtual machine" Lance Court Terry Bibo said something about Comparator. Internet Explorer says I need later software to view many pages, and offers to download. Unfortunately, downloading takes forever. Question is: how can I upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer without downloading? Answer was to buy PC User magazine and there would be a copy on the CD. Did it work? No. I purchased November Australian PC User, it said "run the file \online\msoft\ie5.exe" to instal MS IE 5.01. This looked good, but my joy was shortlived. There is no such directory or file on either of the 2 CDs, and no mention in the CDs' HTML indexes, only on the paper cover of the CD box. I am back at square one. I did find ie5setup.exe (Win32 Cabinet Self-Extractor) in D:\ISP\TPGI\WIN32\EN but that doesn't look like the one, does it? Thanks Lance Hi Lance, Sorry for the misunderstanding. We had to leave IE5.5 off the CD due to space requirements. However, if you give me your postal address I will be able to send you a CD which has the program included. As promised at this weeks meeting, here are a few notes on my "Duplicate Dial-Up Screen" problem. Alistair has been experiencing a 'duplicate dial-up screen' when connecting to the internet and has routinely cancelled this redundant dialogue box. Recently, the duplicate box, which appears just as dialing commences, has become "active" and cancellation now results in disconnection, whether during or after the dial-up process has been completed. He is then given the opportunity to 'reconnect' and this is operation is always successful. Although admitting to being confused by the various responses at C&C, Alistair has actively explored --- "Dial-Up Networking, LT Modem, Configure, Properties, Options", as well as "Connections, Settings, General", etc. etc., and, after considerable experimentation, has reported little success to date. 8) Visual Favorates Charlie Web Copier, Tick ISP.
