Meeting 19 August 1997

Another fine day, with a big roll up, including Gloria
Robbins who has been out of action for some months. A couple
of new members that Ted Macarthur got to introduce themselves and
after that it was on with the meeting.

Emil Joseph held the floor for a while. He attends
another group called Micro80, and last night he witnessed the
recovery of data from a dead hard disk. The program used was
called RESCUE, and is available from Dick Smith for $129.00,
comparatively cheap compared to commercial operations.

Also with in the C&C group, there is a little pool of
Video Capture enthusiasts. This technology was now coming into
home user category, that is prices are coming down and the user
interfaces becoming more friendly. A fair bit of grunt, read RAM,
is necessary for good capturing.

We were also told that Darrell Burkey would not be
renewing his PCUG membership, and in his absence we were able to
freely discuss the exceptional contribution Darrell has made to,
not only the C&C group, but the PCUG as well. The vote was
carried without dissention, that Darrell be configured as an
honourary member of the C&C group, and should feel free to visit
for a cuppa as time and work permits. Thanks Darrell.

Emil also advised that he is happy with his CD Rom
burner, it does what it says it is meant to do. He uses write
only CDs as they can now be had for $4-$5 a piece, compared to
$40 for the rewritable ones. Again prices are tumbling, and will
probably be old technology within the year as DVDs hit the
streets.

Peter Hodge advised that he had purchase Anti Virus
software by VET, version 9.4 for $99. He is extremely pleased
with VET, they have a 1800 number, e-mail service and free
updates. Several other members then pitched in to laud VET and
their service, so someone must be doing something right. A show
of hands revealed that 10% of attendees had been hit by a virus
in recent times.

Wolf Lieske was looking for a decent dictionary. "I've
heard Macquarie went and yankified itself when it became the
Australian standard". Now what Wolf didn't know was that in his
Office 97 prize from the last General Meeting, there is an
Australian Macquarie Dictionary, so he is probably another $70 or
so better off. Wolf....Please install.

Also within the group there is a small band of Flight
Simulator fans. FS has now reached the dizzy heights of being
internationalised via the internet, your performance is checked
and your status as a pilot, you promotions etc , depend on your
hours and these checks. Mike Dinn has now succumbed to the
disease, unfortunately he crashed his Lear Jet into Sydney
Harbour bridge while trying to fly under it , back to Flight
school for him.

Also from Mike, the Seniors Internet show hits the road
at Woden Library, 11 AM 3 October 1997. Ken Livingstone will be
official PCUG rep, and they are still looking for a few more
volunteers.

On the shopping front, The Stationery Warehouse will
match Melbourne prices, Harvey Norman will give a 5% discount to
Senior Card holders.

That was that, the next meeting will be 2 September 1997,
I shall be on the Queensland coast, so till next time, may all
your computers tick over nicely. (This wish does not apply to
Paul Thompson whose life would come to an end if his computer and
programs worked :-)

Owen
