Meeting 19 December 2000

32 Attended - RodB Presiding.

Admin note: Told them we would meet again on 2nd Jan (hangovers allowing).
The club would like to know if we would like them to reserve the large
meeting room - told them lots of members like the small room acoustics. They
apologised for the BBQs and extra chairs in the room last time (now
removed).

1. TIP Proxy Cache - Graham
2. Ad-Aware, IncoculateIT Vrs 5.2.5 - Seti@home JohnS
Ad-aware Vrs 4.02 from www.lavasoft.de has replaced Opt-out to rid your
system of spy and ad-ware. InoculateIT Vrs 5.2.5 from
http://antivirus.cai.com/ now includes a "heuristic" virus finder to smell
them out even if not included in the signature files. Seti@home is now
encouraging their helpers to upgrade to Vrs 3.3 which performs more
extensive analysis and so takes 30% longer per 430 Kb data sample. But this
should relieve the load on the university bandwidth which currently costs
$18,000 big ones per month and SETI takes 1/3rd of it... Download the new
version from http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/download.html
3. Home Publishing - Moby.Jim?
4. Yahoo Christmas Cards - JimH
Have a good selection at http://greetings.yahoo.com If you have an HP
printer - you can download a browser plug-in to print the cards on
bi-or-quad fold card/paper.
5. www.extrafilm.com.au MikeD
6. Printer Cannon? Jeff
7. PCUG at the coast? Keith
8. Old Books - Scanner - EricF
9. Access TIP NGs from Outside TIP - JohnK
10. Recording LPs to CDs - ICON this week - EmilJ
11. OCR discussion - GregB
Asked which of the two major OCR programs were best. General
advice was that there is now little to choose between them. Graham
Mc recommended "Type Reader"
