The 20th of Jun had to be one of the better winter days we have had so far, absolutely beautiful, and again, there were about twenty of us turned up for the C&C meeting. First up Jim Hume gave a run down on his experiences with WIN 95. A summary of his report is as follows: His $50 beta version turns out not to be the latest, apparantly there is a Gold CD ROM available with the latest beta version...a bit dissappointing. The three books that came with the CD ROM were not very helpul in installation, it appears the books are directed towards installation from disks. However once he found "Win 95 applications", installation was a breeze. It is different to Windows 3.xx, but not to difficult to master. PCUG users would probably find the MSN is not worth it, firstly the charges are $5 per hour and $20 per month. When you consider that the maximum speed is 9600 baud, this can be a bit of a problem. He also stated that the MSN Canberra number did not work, but see Kieth Owen's comments below. The Help facilities are excellent, better than anything he had seen ever before. The Help was intuitive and very functional. The Uninstaller program was excellent. Paintbrush has been replaced with Norton Paint which only provides .BMP format. This was thought a backward step. Kieth owen also had installed Win 95 and stated that he had absolutely no problems, works brilliantly, no crashes, no nothing. A satisfied user. It ran DOS programmes better than DOS Better to install without 3.1 on your disk As far as MSN is concerned, you must register properly and it will work OK. Defrag after you have installed to optimise performance. It takes about 55Mbs of disk space, and 30-60 minutes to install, depending on whether you are installing from CD ROM or disks. LIBRARIES. Geoff Mierish advised that the ACT Library service may well be on line "in a few months time". Also the number for the National Library of Australia "Bulliten board" is 2621681. GENERAL. One member described his problems with getting the "free" fonts for his HP Laser 4L. Apparantley it is so old hat that there is a search in HP Archives for them! The same member described his HP desk top scanner as fantastic and would undertake to bring some demo printouts to the next meeting. Darrell Burkley brought along an Atari Portfolio that he had acquired, and gave a run down on the machine. It was more advanced than his old CPM machine, over half a million had been sold, there was a bit of a cult following with this machine because of its versatility and he was very pleased with his acquisition. On member had a "parity checking" error and wondered what it meant. Michael Philips, who happened to be fixing the BBS at the time, gave a run down on the problem, it would appear to be a hardware problem, and under no circumstances should "Parity Checking" be turned off. Wolf was thanked for building the shelves, and it was noticed that the Hot water machine was working real well. Lots of Coffee drunk. Gloria apparantly returns shortly and she may be back next time. Which is the 4 July, Bastille Day I believe. Cheers Owen Fidonet 3:620/243 e-mail rcook@pcug.org.au
