Meeting 20 March 2001

The meeting was chaired by RodB.

Two people attended for their first time: Cecelia and MaryP.

Here's the list of topics discussed during the meeting:

1. Windows problems, Norton Virus scan - TedT

Ted reported that after uninstaling some programs and/or deleting some
files or shortcuts Norton Utilities would give the following message
the next time the computer was started:

"The following Windows problems have been detected. The key
"infobase\shell\open\command" refers to an invalid command entry
"C:ANCESTRY\AGL\BVIEWS.EXE%1". After clicking finish the following
message appears: Invalid ActiveX/com entry - one problem.

Mike suggested using Google to see if there had been any reports made
about the BVIEWS reference. Tony suggested checking for the BVIEWS
file in the Windows directory (sys.ini or win.ini) and deleting it.

2. OwenC. AlanM told us that Owen was in Calvary hospital after an
accident on his pushbike.

3. Index - Greg

4. Windows 2000 Professional - Tony

1. Start up procedure takes about 5 minutes????
Checked for background tasks etc but I cannot seem to improve the
start up time My Widows 98Se starts up in about 30 seconds
Other users seem to be having the same problems.

2. When I use a start up script for PCUG I log on OK initially, but if
I tick the "save password box" the second time round I get the message
"password not recognised" and I have to untick the "Save password
Box'' and re-enter the password.

I have tried rewriting the script and loading service pack 1 etc but
I cannot use the "save password facility".

Help would be appreciated

5. Harvard Story - JohnA

6.a. AcerFax can't attach
Re item (6) (a) Ted told of a friend who was not able to send an
attachment with a fax. The hardware is an Acer HCF 56 k Data/Fax PCI
modem which was supplied with two floppy disks but not a CD. Merv
offered to assist with locating the appropriate CD.

Re item (6) (b) The computer, modem etc referred to above was
purchased at Chandlers at Belconnen which has since closed down.
Enquiries made at the new Southern Energy/Betta Electrical in
Belconnen Mall resulted in the following phone number being obtained
for people with equipment still under warranty from Chandlers: 1800
077 456.

7. Security - Joan

8. REAL -- theride.com uses Real Player- JeffC.
The map site theride.com as described by Terry Bibo, is quite
impressive, but not entirely accurate for choosing best routes - but
undoubtedly it will improve with time. See for example the
recommended route Canberra to Bungonia. One benefit Jeff encountered
was the offer of a new version of Real Player - basic on its homepage.
The download took about 20 minutes but it is a considerable
improvement over the previous version.
