Meeting 22 July 1997

Well despite the foggy weather, 35 or so managed to navigate
their way to this mornings Coffee and Chat meeting. There were a few
new members;
Terry who had a laptop, fixed up by Nhan Tran at an Internet
clinic, but since it crashed, it doesn't connect any more. After some
discussion, he was advised to get the correct driver for his Maestro
modem, and was shown where to find it.

And on the subject of modems, a Netcomm SM 34 will not connect to a
digital modem set up like TIP.....This is Netcomm advice.

Mike has W95 now, but can get his bubble jet to work on it. Again
after some discussion, it appeared he needed to install the driver
Go to Control Panel and then Add a Printer.

Dot came to lurk and learn, but ended up discussing upgrade prices
she had been quoted. Rumour has it Pentium prices are going to fall
again, and she was advise to wait another month and get a new quote.

Someone had an e-mail problem, messages were bouncing, and
would appear that he was attempting to send to an unknown address.
Solution was to get daughter to send an email and get the correct
address off that, although as it was pointed out, lots of people have
inadvertently inserted an incorrect From address.

Roger Lowrie of Flight Sim fame,(via Lou) had just discovered
ICQ, and gave us a great run down on it, not realising that 15 or so
present had ICQ. (Think there was a previous write up on this).
Anyway, the upshot of all this another 10 showed interest in getting
the program. See the next issue of Sixteen Bits for more details.

Paul Thompson was having problems with mail, he has been
receiving mail with a note at the end reading:
"Warning. The remainder of this message has not been transferred.
Click on the server retrieve Icon above and check mail again to get
the whole thing. If the server and retrieve icon are not showing, then
the message is no longer on your server. The estimated size of this
message is 1001 bytes."
Mmmmmmm very interesting, and after some discussion, it was
suggested he check with the postmaster for help, maybe a corrupted
mail box.

Peter Hodge had real problems booting up W95, a lot of LNK
files were not found. Following the usual interrogation, it appears he
once had an Iomega Zip drive permanently installed, but now that it
has gone, the W95 boot up was telling him it was gone. Solution.. Go
to Microsoft and get REGCLEAN, a freebie, and it will clear up the
Registry of all those long forgotten links.

Anyone have any comments on Choice magazines Computer
editions, $36 for 6 issues. Some thought it was a little too basic,
most had never read it, so if you have a view, post it here please.

After all the discussion on FTP email in tip.general, Jim Fogg
was a bit concerned about chewing up bandwidth by sending a 33K
attachment all the way to pommie land. He was advised not to worry and
just send it.

Emil then related a story of an AOL customer having trouble
sending mail, in the end the Help desk discovered she was trying to
send the data from a CD Rom, about 50 Megs worth, no wonder the mail
system chucked the dummy.

With Gordon U( I can't spell it) away, Emil gave a run down on
the Albert hall markets. 16 Meg EDO..$89.00, 16 speed ROM..$130.00,
Mother boards galore, $200 top price, all others less. If you are into
Computer upgrades, check the markets, but as usual, Buyer Beware.

The elections for the PCUG Committee are coming up soon, but
more importantly, nominations for the committee close shortly, like
this Friday, the 26th. They are looking for nominations, so if you
feel you can contribute, please get a friend (or maybe an enemy) to
nominate you.

Next meeting will be 5 August, so till then, may you all have
many happy keystrokes.

Owen
