Meeting 23 Apr 2002

I've been tardy and haven't done my homework as promised. This is
because I haven't been at home. Herewith the final notes as received
from participants:

(2) Roxio Easy CD Creator - TedT
Ted reported that when he used the reset button to start his computer
after it froze, it ran a Norton program even though the Norton
software had been removed ages ago. Suggestions were offered
including checking registy for "Symantec" files, checking winini and
running "EasyCleaner" to find remnants of the original program..

(2) Roxio Easy CD Creator - TedT
The problem Ted reported about not being able to play a re-writable CD
in his original CD unit had nothing to do with the way he was burning
the CD. He was told that he hadn't been doing anything wrong and that
it is quite usual not to be able to read re-writeable CDs in the
standard CD unit.

(3) Irfanfview - JimH. (Jim passed the information to me at the end of
the meeting: New version 3.70 was released on 19th April. Many new
features too numerous to list in this message are available in this
version.

(4) a. Large screen
(4) b. HDD failure
(4) c. Phantom e-mail address - JohnS

(5) PCUG monthly meeting - AllanM

(6) a. Amazingly fast download (XP)
(6) b. XP - OK - RodB
I just applied the latest critical updates to W98SE and IE5.5 SP2 and
now I cannot resize my OE window. It only runs maximized or minimized.
If I click the centre button top right the window minimizes and right
clicking the button in the task bar shows the size option greyed out.
I upgraded to IE6. Same behaviour. I reapplied the critical updates.
Same behaviour. I like to use a mid-size window so this is annoying.
Any ideas anyone? BTW, the Knowledge Base has no comment.

(7) a. Working online
(7) b. Is there a way to update my e-Trust EZ antivirus - ElizabethW
This update seemed to be solved for me by the instructions John S.
generously supplied. However, my computer went berserk again and told
me under other things that my password was wrong, but it had not
changed from day one. Anyhow after 30 minutes I got onto the Internet,
but not on the update I wanted. Jim D. promised to guide me, but I
cannot have phone and internet. Hopefully the problem will be solved
at SIG Internet. The problem is bound to be solved soon.

(8) a. Modem connect speed - XP. After starting Send/Receive in
Outlook Express, the process ran for about 25 minutes before the
server disconnected the session. In that time Tick and Connection
Status reported that more than 32 MBytes (sic) had been downloaded.
Subsequently Popcorn revealed that the message concerned was the
Microsoft Security Update email (a known spoof) and that its
attachment was rather less than 32 MBytes. Deleting this message
resulted in successful download of remaining mail, but why the large
(and apparently very fast) reported download on the first attempt.

8b) By popular request, I reported that I had received my money back
on Windows XP. Even after removing all inessential components from my
PC and starting with a newly formatted disk, I was unable to get XP to
boot after an apparently successful installation. Very frustrating!

In a related discussion I reported working on a newly purchased HP
system running on XP. The system had been supplied preinstalled with
XP and HP extras. Norton AV 2002 was also supplied, but not installed.
How are neophyte users supposed to proceed with that? Also, I noted
that machines purchased from Harvey Norman come with a prearranged
contract with Ozemail which uses a specific mail server not used by
other Ozemail customers.
Derek.

(9) Flash MX help - Rick 'G'

(10) Transtalk connection - CharlesB: Successful Transtalk conection
in Duffy.
Two teams turned up to provide the connection. The first from Transact
(?) provided the copper line from the Pole to the house to the same
point as the main Telstra phone line and placed the small transfer box
inside the roof. The second from Ecowise made the connection from
that box to the point I chose next to my computer. They then left to
visit the super node in Duffy to assign my new Transtalk number to
that new connection. On return they established the connection with a
phone handset that I had to supply and made a test voice call and
hooked up to my computer. I then logged on to my Isp, Webone as
usual. Ecowise then waited while I rang Webone on my main Telstra
voice line and talked me through the minor changes required.
Reconnecting immediately gave me a 49333 connection cf the
40000 I was limited to by the slower Telstra line.
I now have a second phone line for my dialup ISP, a better line,
free calls to my ISP to logon, no charge for the work done and a
much cheaper monthly line charge.
I can recommend Ecowise for efficient, informative and courteous
service. My thanks again to C&C for information and advice which
enabled me to select the best and cheapest Transact option for me.

(11) Tone controls - Wayne

(12) Daguerreotype - TedM: A before and after picture restoration was
demonstrated. An 1850 Daguerreotype was photographed. The photos were
scanned and restored with paint Shop Pro. A composite of several
photos was needed. The photo from one and the background from another.
Fungus marks were removed and blue buttons revealed from the photo by
adjusting the brightness, contrast and gamma facilities. The photo was
then installed in a real antique frame of similar style to the
original. Comparison reveals that more work needs to be done. A good
comment was made . ie to keep the 'before' photo in for future
reference.(TedM)

(13) Links - Emil
Google is great for finding a specific site or a particular
information. But for idle browsing of useful or topical sites the
lists maintained by ABC Radio is very handy.

(14) Exception error OE - Simon
Since installing recent critical updates and also MS Messenger from MS
I started getting a blue screen of death with the following
diagnostic: "An exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C1632AF6 in VxD
AFVXD(01) + 00000056 This was called from 0028:C144440A in Vxd
VTDI(01) + 000000BA. It may be possible to continue normally.
 * Press any key......"

This was occurring invariably while I was searching on the net and
although I was apparently able to continue for a while, I noticed that
OE came up with "unable to connect with mail server" messages, screen
colours started to "degrade" and ultimately the display would freeze,
ie not respond to mouse clicks.

I found that AFVXD.VXD is a Windows Sockets VTDI kernel driver and
VTDI.386 is a TDI support kernel driver. Both reside in
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.

Google searches for the problem have not turned up anything definitive
- some similar exception 0E's were related to incorrect video drivers
so I went looking for an upgrade for my Osborne MAG150LS monitor -
none available.

At the meeting John S suggested repairing using msconfig but I cannot
find a repair facility in my setup.

Any other offers of help greatly appreciated. Thanks, Simon.

(15) Sydney hotel links - JohnS

Regards, Trevor
