Meeting 23 Jul 2002

The coffee and chat northside meeting took place on 23 July at which
TedM chaired and I volunteered to collate the notes.

One new member attended named Vi and I counted 36 people.

CharlieK reported on funds and we circulated the box to add sufficient
for continued coffee and biscuits.

Here is the final collation from e-mail I've received:

1. Market prices - JohnS
JohnS volunteered that he is continually amazed at the rapid drops in
prices. Last Sat at the Woden PC market he picked up a BenQ (Acer) 32
X 10 X 40 CD burner (a bit faster than his old RICOH 6 X 2 X 16 drive
- but not cutting edge) for $99 Brand new with Nero Burning software,
manuals, cables & blank disks - not even OEM. Also noted that PCI
cards with 4 X USB2 ports are down to $55.

2. Reflections of Canbetrra www.act.gov.au/reflections/ CD - MikeD
2. A very good and large collection of Canberra photoes from the 50s
to 90s at: www.act.gov.au/reflectionscd/
I understand a CD can be bought at various ACT government outlets.
But there are many photoes etc on the net - MikeD

Note from Trevor: Reflections of Canberra:
http://www.act.gov.au/heritagelibrary/snapshot/index.cfm
CD available for $10 at libraries.

3. E-mail and netspeed - KenM

4.a. XP - Greg
4.b. XP2 - Nigel

5. IE4 -> IE5.5 - Joan

6. Numlock / shutdown - Kevin. Note from Trevor: Maybe Kevin could
check he's using the right keyboard in Start | Settings | Control
Panel | Keyboard.

7. Help - Jeff
I have learned that certain "reserved" words should not placed in the
Subject line of an e-mail. Thus an e-mail I sent with HELP in the
subject line was blocked by Majordomo. I had never noticed this Major
before and was told that a list of reserved words can obtained by an
e-mail to Majordomo@tip.net.au with nothing in the Subject line and
the word Help in the message.
I tried this but if the reserved words came in the reply, I am not
able to recognise them.
Also, given that I am no longer a TIP subscriber and use
@webone.com.au, why do my e-mail have anything to do with Majordomo in
my case. My guess is that HELP is also a reserved word for webone.
I hope someone else will comment on all this. In meantime I will not
ever enter "help" in the subject line for an e-mail.
Jeff

Note from Trevor: I understand that one should send messages to the
list candc@pcug.org.au rather than Majordomo.
There generally is not a need to talk to the robot unless one wants to
know Who participates in the list or wants further help when talking
to Majordomo. The reserved words are usually contained in the message
and not the subject line. If one has a signature then one should place
two or three hyphens in the body of any message and Majordomo will not
act apart from distribute your message to all who participate in the
list.

8. Telstra effort for Gungahlin (info only) - CharlieK
Charlie reported on conversations he had held with Telstra re their
future plans. Interesting to see that the Task Force investigating
solutions is based in Townsville. Their research looks promising, and
one reasonably priced option available immediately. If anyone really
needs the details mail me at ckarlsen@pcug.org.au

9. Cradles (?) removable disks - AlanV
Renumbering begins

10.a. Network password window
10b. Gear Pro CD-RW 6.0 -- PeterH

Regards, Trevor
