Meeting 23 July 1996

About 25 turned up this morning to yet another interesting
meeting. There was a letter from Gloria with a work in progress report
plus a travelogue of her adventures in the Solomons. Good luck to you
Gloria.

There was a plea for more stuffers, they are the second last
Monday night of the month people who stuff 3000 odd Sixteen bits into
plastic bags and then stick labels on them so the postman knows where
to send them. Please consider.

Wolf Lieske, with Darrell Burkey gave a rundown on the
bookmark system in Netscape, Ver 2.0 onwards. It is a preety good
system, and fairly intuitive. You make folders, and put your bookmarks
in the folders. Just play around with it, you can't do much damage,
make sure you have a couple of separators between folders, and if you
make a mistake, just highlight the line and press Delete. You can also
drag and drop your bookmarks.

Darrell Burkey gave a presentation on Acrobat, a freeware
reader that reads .PDF (portable document files). Darrell's emphasis
was more on the electronic publishing side of the Adobe system, and
its versatility. He was so impressed at what the Adobe Road Show
people presented, he has invited them to speak at the main PCUG August
meeting. To quote "It is mind boggling".

Wolf Lieske stated that he got the Real Audio plug in for
Netscape, and was surprised to get an hours presentation from the
Netscape site while he was able to do other things like surf the net.
It was explained that the internet uses packet switching, and you are
able to do a number of things at the same time, for instance, you can
be receiving a Real Audio message, downloading a gigantic graphic
filled page, FTPing a large file, and sending and receiving e-mail all
at the same time. Your computer and the "system' works it all out.

Emil Joseph gave a run down on last Tuesdays Virtual Coffee
and Chat, he believes the protocols are now kind of sorted out and
invited others to join in. For details go to Emil's page:
http://www.pcug.org.au/~ejoseph/
and from there to the VCC page.

Gordon Urquhart is now drumming up business for good quality
paper, and hopes to complete his investigations and then try and get
the PCUG to handle it like they do diskettes now. The best he can do
is about $15 a ream, compared to $35 in some shops. Samples of various
colour prints from Anne Warrener's colour printer were handed around,
the comment being that different paper on different printers produce
different pictures.

While he had the floor, Gordon told of an ink jet refill he
had received for just under $50. It had 4 bottles of refill ink,
syringes, and a bottle of Isopropanol to clean the heads, he has yet
to use it to get his recalcitrant printer to function yet, so we
anxiously await his next report.

Memory came up for discussion again, it appears that if you
hunt around, you can get good prices. Compared to this time last year,
memory is very cheap.
QUESTION. What are double sided SIMMS ? What are their characteristics
compared to single sided SIMMS. Anyone who can answer this, please do
and let us all know. TIA

Phillip Bell from the friends of Mt Painter advised they now
have a web site, please visit:

PROBLEMS.

Maurene Grundy bought a Connor back up unit from the Software
shop, advertised as being capable of going into a 5.25 slot or 3.5
inch slot, but found it was only capable of the former. Noise levels
got a bit high here so I probably missed some of the nitty gritty, but
she has taken it back to the Shop to be made "fit for purpose". She
also is having problems dealing with Aadvark, and would be interested
in hearing from anyone else with similar problems.

Peter Hodge who has a son in Vietnam is looking for
CH FLIGHT STICK PRO, apparently a joy stick controller. Unfortunately
no-one had heard of it and I guess Peter's son will have to fly on
without it.

Fred Franks had bought a new colour printer, and couldn't get
the thing to work. It was a lexmark, and the handbook indicated that
it works in DOS only, the mind boggles, the hand book had an entry,
How to operate in Windows, but when you turned to the page, there was
no information there. I think there is a lesson here, if you are
buying a printer, make sure it has Windows drivers. Further reading of
the book showed that you could emulate the drivers with Deskjet500 set
up, but it seemed to be a poor way of doing things. Last seen, Maurene
Grundy was giving Frank a lesson on how to emulate the printer. Good
luck Frank.

And that was it for another fortnight, next meeting Tuesday, 6
August 1996, so see you then.

Yesterday I had a cousin Jane,
	Who thought she was an aeroplane;
	Today just for proof,
I threw her off the roof

(found in aus.comms, though aus.aviation would have been more
appropriate)
