Meeting 23 October 2001

Minutes of the Meeting held 23 October 2001

JS was chairman and 37 people turned up.
A small collection was made after Eric said that assets were low.

The meeting discussed the following topics :

   1. BSOD As you all know BSOD stands for Blue Screen Of Death. I
noticed that someone had brought out a program to change the colour. Trevor

   2. Gov security e-mail and web sites (Jim H). Your e-mail address is
being stored if you visit any government site.

   3. Outlook express queries ( Kryn)

   4. CnC books and equipment (Allan M). Alan offered to collect items from
the CnC Library at Belconnen on the Monday prior to the Tuesday CnC meeting
and bring the item to the Irish Club. A kind offer. Thanks Alan.

   5. Melb Cup lunch at next South Side meeting ( JS)

   6. Don't believe what you see.
Do not believe that because the user name and/or password look OK on the
screen that this information is not in fact corrupt.
In other words if you have an unexpected rejection of a log on to
anything or if you have been invited to insert some log on information
for a site and you cannot complete the task, then re insert the
details. A fresh entry may remove some invisible error which is
giving your computer a fur ball problem. (Grahame M)

   7. Undisclosed addresses (Paul H).

   8. With Outlook Express. It has been suggested by the Micro - 80 group
in their newsletter that you add a 0000 (zero's) name with no e-mail
address to the
address list. This will warn of illegal accessing of your address list.
This puts an unknown address at the top of your address list and an error
will be shown if a virus reads your address list.(or so the theory goes). I
have done this. (Ted M)
Comments suggested that if worried, you should get the free program
'Popcorn.exe' which allows you to see the mail on the server before you
download any mail.

   9. IE versions 6 (Emil) Does it have any useful new features?
My primary concern was whether IE6 works with internet banking
(specifically, St. George) in the reported absence of Java support.

The discussion was not definitive on that point. But the general
consensus was that upgrading to IE6 was not worth it, as there are
other incompatabilities.

 13. Travelmate. (Mike D) a web site to calculate car travel distances
and choose the best way to go.
The link is:
www.travelmate.com.au

10. ffff**** . temp files with 0 bytes. Alan had several thousands of
them. ( Alan V). Can they be removed with safety? Answer keep the most
recent ones. Also that Word with Excel produced many of these.

  11. The Observer of October 21st (Charles B) had criticism of Microsoft
and the XP operation system in particular.

   12. Outlook Express (Elizabeth) lost all her messages.

   13. Travelmate. (Mike D) a web site to calculate car travel distances and
choose the best way to go.

    14. How do you set up a secure web site (Greg). An answer was given that
it was difficult and that certificates had to be obtained

Extra item (LeighD)
I asked C&C meeting whether Excel2000 could be loaded
successfully on top of Office 97 . The answer was "yes".
I have sucessfully loaded Excel 2000 and
Word 2000 onto Office 97. However I have not been succesful with Disk2
of Office 2000.which recorded error 2355.

The meeting ended at 11.30 am.
