CnC 24Oct2000 30+ attended - PeterH presided 1. ParaOlympics -TedT Ted was overwhelmed with a visit 2. Media Player - JimJ 3. Networking - WinME - DVD - JohnS A. Gave up on two ISA cards - although recognised by BIOS and windows with no IRQ or Address conflicts - no PC to card communications on either system. Brought 2 PCI 100 MBS cards ($25 each at markets) - installed with no problems - now lightening fast backups - printer sharing, etc. B. Installed WinME with no problems (disconnected USB devices first). The "GoBack" capability might make it worthwhile, otherwise a minor update to W98SE. Fairly heavy system requirements though. C. DVD now plays all regions thanks to hacked firmware. 4. Never believe what you see - JimH 5. How to type in French accents - ElizabethW How can you type a letter in French plus accents? Three answers were suggested: a) Use Word 97 (set-up French keyboard and spell checker - probably involves a word/office reload - Ed) b) Use Word 2000, much simpler, but you also must use the French Dictionary and may be the French alphabet on the keyboard instead of the English one you are used to. c)"All Cards" a software, you can download for free and which is reliable.. (Actually "AllChars" - a nice "Symbol popup" program - I tried it and installed on Elizabeth's system - PeterH provided the following info -Ed) The free program AllChars can be downloaded from http://allchars.polder.net/ AllChars provides a quick, easy-to-remember way of creating accents like é Ü ç î æ and special characters like f ² ? © £ ± ß ° 1/2 ¿ « » T " in most Windows programs. AllChars v3.5 and later supports macros: type a (short) name and AllChars will replace it with a (long) text. AllChars is very easy and intuitive in usage and it is possible to adapt it to your wishes. AllChars is FREEWARE. AllChars works with Windows 3.11, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows2000. 6. Majordomo - 5 pages - ElizabethW The five printed pages refer to "help" and need not worry me any longer, as I do get the CnC notes which are so very valuable. (E. attempted to resubscribe to the mailing list but her format was not quite correct - so the Majordomo software returned the 5 "Help" pages which caused some confusion - Ed). 7. How to teach KB skills to blind people - Rick 8. CMI8330 drivers - GregB Backlighting - Hints on E-mail URL for the site about Netscape Eudora Outlook differences http://www.abstractconcreteworks.com/essays/email/Email-StylesAndFormats 9. Jet engines - GrahamM 10. Digital cameras (General discussion - a delightful new Sony 2.1 Mpixel model was proudly shown - complete with 8 Mb "chewing gum" memory stick - Ed) 11. From 17th Oct N'side meeting: BobS wanted a program to enable making a printout of directories in Windows 98 Explorer. Suggestions included freeware programs IrfanView and PrintFolder. Both were found using Google, and PrintFolder did the job. IrfanView did not appear to copy the Windows 98 Explorer directories (you need to copy the window to the clipboard - then paste into IrfanView. But a dedicated freeware program would be much better - Ed). 12. The suggestion was made that it would be useful to attendees if particular meetings focussed (mainly) on one topic of interest. It was agreed that the next S'Side meeting on 7th Nov would focus on PRINTERS.Return to the Index or the Coffee and Chat Page
