The meeting was held at the PCUG Centre, chaired by JohnA, notes byRodB. The following notes are what I remember. I didn't concentrate hard enough, so please supply corrections and amplification. I will then reissue the notes later. The treasurer reported that the cash balance had fallen below $500. With some dissenting voices the meeting agreed to start contributing $1 a head again for a period. 1. Missing CD ROMs - CharlieK Charlie has a relatively new machine running XP and 98SE in a dual boot environment. He has added a CD RW drive and a hard disk to the original configuration. He found he could not read CDs created on his old system in XP and when he rebooted into 98 he could not access the CD at all. Device manager shows ! marks against IDE ports and no devices are found under 'disks'. Suggestions made included: confirm all CMOS settings are correct; install the VIA chipset drivers. 2.PHPost - BillP Bill said he had not been able to use PHPost. AllanM said it had ben defunct on TIP for some time, but had not been heavily used beforehand. It will probably be fixed some time. 3. Tranact - KenM Ken pointed out the availability of a button map diagram for the handheld remote control that is supplied with the Transact service. 4. Light entertainment - Adèle Recently Adèle had been away in Sydney and looking for a good source of takeaway food. www.mrdelivery.com.au had been suggested and proved to be very good. The site offers an interface to many takeaway suppliers. A similar service is at www.cuisinecourier.com.au. Adèle looks forward to the time when such services appear in Canberra. 5a. XP->98 Networking - MikeD Mike had been experiencing a very slow connection between his two machines. He reinstalled Netbeui in XP and fixed the problem. 5b. DScaler TV card Mike found a site (address please, Mike) set up by a consortium of software writers. There he found new drivers for his TV card which gave excellent and superior results. 5c. Webone download rates. Webone have increased the permissible download volume for their charging rates. 500MB goes up to 800MB and 300 goes to 350. 6. Outlook Express mailbox location - Joan Joan wanted to know how to change the default location of the mailboxes. JohnS said that a place to change the setting could be found under Tools>Options>Maintenance. 7. PC Advisor - AllanM Allan reported that Belarc Advisor was available from belarc.com and passed round its output to show how well it reported the hardware and software contents of a system. In the ensuing discussion JohnS mentioned that SiSoft Sandra could print out CMOS settings if desired. Allan also mentioned a site, XP-erience.org, which has lots of really good stuff on WinXP. 8a. More on DVRs - JohnS John repeated some of his information from the previous meeting about the TiVo device which can simultaneously record and playback TV channels. He had found other similar devices on the'net. ReplayTV is available in Oz at in excess of $3000. John also pointed out that it would probably be possible to program one's computer to do the same job. 8b. Command line inteface. John pointed out an article in the current PC Authority about available programs in XP that are not readily visible. They can be executed from the command line (Run) and perform many useful functions. Many of the programs are also present in earlier versions of Windows. 9. Open Office - TonyS Tony said he had been trying Open Office and thought it good, but it had changed all the associations in his sytem to itself. AllanM said this was an installation option and could be prevented. 10. Outlook Express accounts - RodS Rod runs multiple email accounts. Only one out of the three is set to be normally opened, but that doesn't seem to be what is happening. Recommendation was to delete and set the accounts up again. 11. Uninstall Quicken4 - BobS Bob is still trying to uninstall Quicken4. Members recommended that after deleting the Quicken directories he should run EasyCleaner and regclean. 12. IMSI - PrintShop Pro offer - Kevin Kevin noted that the subject offer included other programs among which was PaintShop Pro. Discussion revealed that the version offered was 4.12, which is old and in any case available from the 'net for free. 13. Adaware - Philip Philip is running Adaware. It starts automatically and creates several screens which he finds annoying. Can he get rid of it?
