'I have a number of utilities which claim to clear TEMP files, yet none seem to work. Even the Disk Cleanup from My Computer/C Drive Properties does nothing either.' (Graham McCann) * IE Upgrade - loss of address book. 'The solution offered by John Saxon was to use the Find facility in Windows Explorer, looking for *.wab, and to find the temp location that the .wab files had been sent by the upgrade. The wanted addresses can then be cut and pasted to the new address book.' (Simon Cowling) * Copying error messages to the Clipboard. http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/topics/errormsg/emresctr.asp is the URL for the MS Knowledge Base section on Error messages. The program that allows you to copy virtually all messages (+ much more ) to the Clipboard has the unlikely name of Kleptomania! It is at http://www.structurise.com/kleptomania which has words like .... 'Kleptomania 2.3 allows to capture and process text from any (even clipboard-unaware) application. Copy text onto clipboard, launch internet browser or email editor, sum numbers, count a number of words/characters. Process text of folder trees, file lists, database reports, text content of messages and dialog boxes, menus, status lines, visible text of legacy systems, and more. Kleptomania does not rely on any data communication scheme behind the scene. Uses OCR and delivers ultimate text capture and processing abilities. It's shareware and costs $29.95 to register after 30 day trial.' (both items fromJohn Saxon). * Google - Anything better? 'No, though 'eureka' is good for within Australia searches.' (Alan Vidler) A search engine spoken of by John Saxon is called Teoma, http://www.teoma.com 'I have used it several times and it worked for me.'(Charles Bubb) * Discussion on Windows XP. 'Everything you want to know about Windows XP are usefully collected at : http://dailynews.yahoo.com/fc/Tech/Microsoft_Windows/ It has all the news stories and reviews including the following: - about WPA (windows product activation) built into Win XP http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2814309,00.html?chkpt=zdhpnews 01 - a balanced review from the Washington Post http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A1230-2001Sep20.html But there is more! Here's one from Info World magazine: http://www.infoworld.com/articles/op/xml/01/09/17/010917opfoster.xml?0920tha m In a scathing attack on MS product and marketing policies it alleges that "one alert reader just spotted in the license for FrontPage 2002. "You may not use the Software in connection with any site that disparages Microsoft, MSN, MSNBC, Expedia, or their products or services ... " the license reads in part. " ' (Emil Joseph). * Discussion on Transact. 'Transact ran an information session at the Mawson Raiders Club on Tuesday 11th and the proposed reticulation plan for Mawson and Farrer was presented. About 6 locals, including Merv and Simon, attended. Subsequently Transact Reps have been doorknocking the area attempting to sign people up in advance for their long distance phone services with the promise that if you signed up you would get free connection to Transact when they were cabling in your area.' (Simon Cowling) The following is from Charles Bubb and is the text of a message he received on 25/9 from WebOne. 'Web One Internet has our first customer connected via the TransACT broadband network. This means that if you have a TransACT broadband service and want to use it with Web One Internet it can be arranged. If your suburb has not yet been cabled or may never be cabled by TransACT or if you are not interested in using any TransACT service you do not need to worry. Your Web One service will not be effected (sic) in any way. Many Web One customers have waited for Web One to go live with TransACT broadband rather than switching to an alternate provider. I want to say thank you to those people. Anyone who has an account on the Web One system and upgrades to a TransACT broadband service will receive a $20 credit to their account once they pay their first bill for broadband. Anyone who signs up with Web One for a TransACT broadband service at the recommendation of an existing customer, will also receive a $20 credit once they pay the first account and the $10 spotters credit that goes to the recommending customer will be increased to $20 for these accounts. Please note that this offer is our way of saying thanks to those who have stood by Web One and for this reason applies only to those who are currently able to connect via TransACT and who sign up with Web One before 31 October 2001. If you would like more information about TransACT specifically please visit http://www.transact.com.au You are of course always most welcome to write or phone Web One for information on TransACT broadband or any other service.' ****************************************************** Coffee & Chat Page, inluding archives of past meetings http://www.pcug.org.au/pcug/candc/ ******************************************************
