Meeting 26 Jun 2001

Minutes of the Meeting held 26 June 2001

Here are the responses from various members and some further comments from
me. Slight delay in delivery has been caused by my short sojourn in Sydney
away from my computer.

1. MS IE Resource Kit - Trevor
Trevor writes: MS Internet Explorer Resource Kit. It had been suggested by
JohnS
that Coffee and Chat get a copy of this because the one the group had
was borrowed by someone a year or more ago and had then moved
interstate. The consensus among those who responded was that this
publication was worth about 1 per cent of what it would cost.

2. Question - Trevor
Trevor writes: Joke: Question - does it mean that you've had way too much
computing or that you've finally gone insane when you wake up and look
at your digital clock radio and think "the blasted screen saver hasn't
kicked in again".

3. Anti-Virus - KenM
Ken writes: Now InoculatIT has folded another FREE, if good, Anti Virus
program is
needed. One such is AVg 6.0 Free Edition. This got a very good
write up in PCPlus. I have installed it and am satisfied with it.
Can be downloaded from www.grisoft.com in the Czech Republic. Try it.
You have nothing to lose except viruses.

4. Netscape Inbox - George
During the meeting George said that he had found a text file that contained
all the messages he had ever sent or received. Discussion revealed that this
is the underlying standard way in which mail is handled. Individual mail
programs maintain their own indexes to this file and allow the user various
means of manipulating it through their own interfaces.

5. .sit extension - Charlie
Emil writes: This is the extension originally used by the compression and
archiving
program called Stuffit, most often used on the MacIntosh/Apple family
of computers. More at:
http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-to/exchange/internet/coding/sit.html
AllanM writes: Further info from Charlie that this was a "system" and
contained within a
hqx file type led to the conclusion that it was probably a mac program.
A bit of further investigation (using Wayne Corbin's file extension list at
http://www.pcug.org.au/~wcorbin) shows that sit is stuffit file format -
one of the mac equivalents of zip. I do still suspect that when unstuffed
(?) the file will turn out to be a program to run on a mac.

6. Enditall and CD burning - MikeD
During the meeting Mike said that he had used Enditall to kill all
non-essential programs before attempting to burn a CD and that the resultant
burn process had been trouble free. He was very pleased by this result and
recommended the process.
Mike also initiated discussion about the differences between coax (BNC) and
unshielded twisted pair (UTP, aka RJ45) cabling for networking computers at
home. Discussion suggested that for the home there was practically no
difference, but UTP is far more readily available and cheaper than BNC for
home use. If more than two computers are to be linked hubs will be required
in either case. RodB erroneously suggested that it was necessary to tell
software which cabling was in use. He was remembering earlier days when some
Ethernet cards had additional connections for external transceivers as well
as on-board transceivers. It was then necessary to tell software whether or
not to use the on-board transceiver (life is so simple today!)..

7. DVD; USB - JohnA
JohnA writes: I was looking for advice wrt DVD's and if USB connections were
available as
cards.
DVD I have subsequently purchased an AOPEN DVD-1240 which supports the
following formats.
DVD DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW
CD CD-DA, CD-ROM/XA, CD-R, CD-RW, I-Trax,CD, CD-Extra, Photo-CD, Video-CD,
CD-I, CD-Text
Cost was $154 from Cougar www.cougar.com.au
USB - cards are available.

8. Connect to X2 - Kryn
Kryn told the meeting that he had a complex connection problem in that
application programs were requesting the establishment of a connection even
though a valid connection was already established. No resolution emerged
during discussion.
