Another Coffee and Chat, always something going on, and
today was no exception, first of all someone had tried to force
their way in, damaging the front door, so we used the back door,
Telstra people were fixing a concrete slab, and a technician was
looking at whatever technicians look at.
So with all this activity, Gloria opened the meeting with
notes from Geoff Mierish and Jim Hume. Geoff is still tied to his
oxygen system, but at home, and able to access the BBS. He expects
to be out of circulation for some time. Jim Hume, although still
a bit swollen, is slowly gaining mobility, all these things take
time, and the older you are, the longer it takes. We wish both of
them well.
An advice from Dieter Amelung indicated his genealogical
expedition to the UK and Europe was proving interesting. We all
wish him well also.
Emil Joseph gave a run down on last nights AGM. The main
points being:
The accounts of the group were passed after considerable
questioning and answers.
All the motions as advertised in Sixteen Bits were passed save
that proposed by Andrew Freeman re QPR voting.
A vote was held for the position of Vice President. Lis Shelley
was elected.
Helen Frew withdrew her nomination for the committee, leaving
all other nominees elected.
A presentation was made by John Hilvert. It was an interesting
talk, and once he had changed into his Internet Man uniform,
gave a run down on where he saw PCUG going in the future, and
suggested that User Groups may become more involved in consumer
rights.
Problems
Derrick Boyd had several hundred disks containing information
that he was legally bound to keep for 10 years. It was all done
on Microbee and he had been unable to contact the Alien PC
people. Ken Meadows offered to use his alien PC facilities to
convert Derrick's files.
Peter Hodge's home key doesn't move the cursor, and it was
suggested that the problem lay in the SetUp program, which
should be run to change the keyboard.
Kryn Versteeg is still, after four weeks, having troubles
getting into the Internet. Emil offered to help in this matter.
Ken Meadows was trying to printout dropline charts, but wanted
to make the character size 20cpi, rather than the 17 cpi that
seemed to allowed by his IBM character set and 9 pin printer.
Several suggestions were made, including trying to put it into
Notepad or even Word, or a text editor like PFE.
Gordon Urquart advised that Works 95 is now available. There
seemed to be a limited supply at the moment, $69 for the
upgrade, $79 for the full version.
Wolf Lieske has a CD rom that doesn't read the sound from
Encarta, but does from his Birds disk. Unfortunately, no one
knew what the problem could be.
Neville Anderson noted that his Scandisk is forever reporting
crossed files and other errors which it fixes, and wondered what
might be the cause. derrick Boyd suggested, that like most other
things getting old, it could be dementia..
Peter Hodge wanted to know if anyone had used SoftRam. The
program was not known to the group, though it was thought to
compress RAM, and maybe should be avoided.
Conclusion
Gloria advised that she would organise another Picnic, probably
10 October, and a Christmas function, probably 21 November.
Watch this space for details.
Cheers Owen
