Minutes of the Meeting held 27 November 2001

Apart from receiving many messages from people I've never seen nor met
with attachments such as "New_Napster_Site.mp3.pdf" and others with
attachments like *.doc.pif"
These were identified as worms by InoculateIT.

Geoff T, GloriaR, AnneG were among those whom I received these files
from, As these messages had attachments I was reluctant to save them
and will no longer do so.

Herewith is the list of subjects discussed.

1. Scanner Magic - MobyJ
'Jim D passed around 'before' and 'after' photos of a century-old
family photograph to show what a home scanner and scanner software
were capable of doing in resurrecting/restoring what was in the
original, an extremely faded image.'

 6.a. Goldwave digital video editor
This application is available at
www.goldwave.com/. It costs about $ 55 Canadian and is fast, fairly
cheap and has most features. It can edit, visualise, play and convert
sound files. It can remove pops, crackles and turntable hum. It is
very sophisticated and has some features not present in other similar
programs.

6.b. The above site also sells an application called 'Multiquence
Multitrack Mixer' which edits home videos, records and songs. It has
separate instrument and vocal tracks. It simulates an automated radio
station with 6 hours of playback time. It can handle, wav,mp3,aiff,ogg
and au digital audio files as well as avi,mov and mpg video files. A
demo version is available (Vs 2.02) The site has had 3,504,775 hits
since Nov 02, I have no experience with this application.

6.c. The Voynich puzzle. The book was bought in the year 1412, by
King Rudolph ll. The decoding of the contents has proved impossible to
date but it is not likely to be a hoax. The book is thought to contain
secrets of a herbal nature from medieval times. A print of three pages
from the book was passed around.

A screen print of a program called 'Chess-it! vs 3.x was distributed.
The program is excellent. It announces vocally each move. It is
difficult to beat. The application has many useful features

A screen print of a movie was distributed. The aim was to see if
anyone knew the identity of a person in the picture. LeighD won,
identifying the person as Charlie Chaplin. TedM

8.Keyboard - TrevorF. Issue already addressed in my outbox today.

9.Transact v. Telstra adsl - Charlie
I have recently moved to Ngunnawal from Spence and have experienced a
severe drop in transmission speed - now only getting 28,800bps
compared with 46,600 previously.

I have thus been considering a change to Transact or Telstra's ADSL
and sought views on the relative merits of each (or horror stories).

There were users present using each, but no one able to make
comparisons. All existing users of each service seemed relatively
happy with their experience to date. It really comes down to what
kind of service you want, how much data you download etc etc.

In my case however the whole thing is academic.

Transact will not be in Ngunnawal until about 2036 and I have now
discovered that ADSL is also not available on my phone line. Seems
like satellite is the only option and I can get only 64kbps for $70
per month. 400kbs is available for considerably more.

So I'll just have to accept my lot for now.

10. My Album - AlK
After a longish break from this program, I experienced difficulties in
editing our daughter-in-law's family album. Mike D, john S and Rod B
spoke very positively about the program. The difficulty seemed to be
related to the requirement NOT to move the files from their original
location, whilst doing the renaming-batch renaming operations.
Looking at the comments, one could see that the original paths to the
image files were still there. I was using MyAlbum v 1.5, which was
released earlier this year.

Before coming to the meeting I had downloaded (1.6 MB, 33 seconds
download time on the much maligned TransACT 256 KB/sec line) the
latest version of the MyAlbumSetup.exe file for v 2.0 of the program.
I had no time to install and try this version of program before the
meeting.

After the meeting I did try the program and - the paths of the image
files were corrected to reflect the current location of the files! No
more problems with the absolute paths referring to the original file
location - it is no longer cast in stone!

Great little program, particularly with the latest update to v 2.0.
Thanks to all for the suggestions. A copy of this email is sent to
the French Canadian author of the program in place of a thank you
note.

--------

Regards, Trevor
