The points listed on the whiteboard today were: 1. Moby-J: a. Media Player, saving to disk b. Short cut to domain addresses There was discussion whether it was possible to save movie trailer/clip material that was viewed through Media Player. One member reported that the video material once viewed did not appear in the temporary internet files folder. The answer given was that as the material through Media Player was 'streaming video', with the present speed of modem connections, it could not be cached to the temporary folder. A member advised on a short cut means of typing in a domain name in the address bar of Internet Explorer. If the address is a '. com' one, if one types the name eg. 'zdnet' and press Control + Enter, IE adds the 'www' and '.com' bits and it appears as 'www.zdnet.com'. This only works with a straight '. com', not where the suffix is, for example, 'au'. 2. Merv: Intstall Network Card (system says OK) cannot get network icon. From ChrisC in a remote location: If this is referring to the Network Neighbourhood icon, its probably because he hasn't installed "Client for Microsoft Networks". 3. Trevor-F: Microphone and headphones. Cannot get the microphone working. From JohnS: Assuming the microphone is plugged into the correct sound card socket (you may need a torch and a magnifying glass!). Then double click on the loudspeaker item in the system tray and you should get the sound card mixer control - make sure the microphone is not muted. Then go to the mixer options and properties and select recording. Make sure the Microphone is ticked and click OK. Then make sure the microphone is selected and adjust the slider volume to max. Back to Options, properties and select Playback and OK out. Then go to Start|Programs|Accessories|Entertainment (or Multimedia) and Sound Recorder and see if you can record and playback O.K. If so - you can go onto NetMeeting and set-up the Recording and Playback levels there. No point if the Windows sound recorder does not record - in that case feel free to call me on xxxx-xxxx ----------- From TrevF: I had several responses to my question including the one above, from ChrisC and a telephone call from TedT. Problem now solved after working on painting the ceiling and walls of the loungeroom. 4. Leigh-D: Cheap books 5. Owen-C: MP3 player and misc. Thanks to CnC, this problem was solved. What was the problem? Well going to Mike Dinn's page http://www.pcug.org.au/~mdinn to get the truth, I attempted to "hear" the 20 second ABC news item recording of "...the Eagle has landed' My MSIE presented a box ... Do you want to download Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer 3 Codec by Microsoft Coorporation" I said yes, and about 2 seconds later was able to hear the recording. So thanks to John Saxon for identifying the lack of the codec thinggy 6. Bob-S: Exception Outlook Express - W98SE 7. Mike-D: Digital cameras, best buy? 8. Alan-M asked for opinions about where the group was going and should go. Several answers were forthcoming and Alan would raise it at the forthcoming committee meeting. I had a thought on the way home that perhaps monthly meetings could be much like each C&C meeting. The ideal of "users helping users" would thus be further addressed. We could even have one issue published in the magazine. ======= From MichaelL: At the October meeting we reinstituted the Q&A session prior to the speaker's presentation. The feedback from those present has been positive and we intend to continue it next year. We also intend to move away from "sales droid" presentations and more towards SIG presentations and other "user-oriented" meetings. If anyone has an idea for a presentation, please shout - we're listening!
