1. Gloria - Eden - CnC3
2. Transact - Jeff
Jeff reported he has been very satisfied with his conversion to TransACT and
is finding the monthly quota of 300MB for downloads with the WebOne plan he
has chosen adequate for his interests.
He sought advice for a problem he had, for example in displaying the
TransACT International telephone call rates. Pressing appropriate buttons
brought up a blank page with a little object in top left hand corner and
clicking the object with left or right mouse button did nothing to obtain a
display. Comment was that a downloading program was not installed which he
doubted having had no problem with pdf or gif files in the past. On Thursday
though when he sought the nature of the file by right hand button/Properties
he found it was a pdf file (http://www.transact.com.au/pdf/hs/LD_price.pdf)
and on experimenting with the installed free Adobe Acrobat Reader version
5.0 he was offered the upgraded version 5.0.5. After installing this
version, to his surprise all worked well and the LD_price.pdf displayed.
The rates incidentally seem very good, for example $0.10 per minute to UK at
any time.
So upgrade to this new free version of Acrobat Reader!

3. Zone alarm - Kryn
4. Experience - CharlieK - JohnS
A. Charlie reported that he had clean installed Windows XP to a fresh
partition on a spare disk and was now able to dual boot to either XP or
98SE.
He reported no problems with XP. A number of applications seem to be
able to run under XP without any re-installation (obviously those that
do not require Registry settings), while others would require
re-implementation.
He is now in the process of porting all major applications and data and
intends to run a mean and clean machine with a minimum of superfluous
dross. This is assisted by XP which now includes a number of functions
previously only obtainable from separate utilities - Tray manager is an
example.

B. John commented;
    a. Jim will be happy to know that I ran into some difficulties a week
ago - the system did not crash but would not boot - normal or safe mode.
    b. During boot - the following error message was displayed:
" Stop: C0000218 (Registry file failure)
The registry cannot load the hive (file): \ System
root\system32\config\software
or it's log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent or not writeable"
    c. Unable to boot to safe mode or "last known good configuration" - same
error message.
    d. Used a win98 emergency disk to boot to DOS - did several things like
creating a new blank "software" file - renaming "software.sav" file to
"software", etc - but no change to boot problem.
    e. I had felt a bit guilty about doing the first XP installation "over
the top" of WinME - so decided to bite the bullet and (for the first time in
2-3 years) do a Format C:!
    f. Formatted and tried to install by the old method (Boot from emergency
disk with CDROM support and run Setup from the CD). Response "XP cannot be
installed from DOS".
    g. Damn - decided to install ME (O.K. from DOS) - got 1/2 way thru and
read the "Clean install" section of the XP book..... Found I should have
booted from the CD! Stopped ME install & formatted again.
    h. Changed CMOS to boot from CD first. Booted O.K. and XP offered to
Install or repair! Double - damn. Didn't have to format at all - but it was
long overdue.
    i. No problems install - except when I "showed" the system my ME CD it
would not continue as that was an upgrade. Had to "show" it an OEM full
install edition of Win98SE.....
    j. Did not bother with most of the drivers that I had carefully
downloaded for the original install, and everything is working well - JohnS

5. Moving Applications - PeterH
Peter H asked if anyone could recommend a program that would move
applications between partitions. He has two hard drives on his computer and
wants to move applications from the D drive to the C drive. He is looking
for a program that will move applications from one path to another, at the
same time changing the registry entries.
An excellent program called Application Mover was recommended. It can be
downloaded at http://www.funduc.com/app_mover.htm

6. Notebooks (1) - AlanV
7. Notebooks (2) - AlanV
8. NSW BDM - TedT
Ted T asked if anyone with an interest in genealogy knew what meaning
attached to letters/initials which appeared in the "place" column of the
NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages web site.
Joan said that they identified the churches where pre-1856 births, deaths
and marriages were recorded and that an explanation for the symbols should
be available in the National Library's genealogy section. Merv M suggested
that a search for Cora Nunn using the Google search engine may turn up an
appropriate web site

9. Virus - Sulfbnk.exe - PeterR
10. a. Web based mail
      b. TIP accounting - AllanM
11. Image manipulation - MikeD
12. Setup.exe won't run - Wayne
13. InoculateIT updates - John
14, Russian worm - AlK
15. Restore wont! - Derek
16. Shortcut - Anne
17. Best replacement for InoculateIT - Elizabeth.
Members of the SIG Internet thought that Inoculate was still the best and as
it is going on providing free service till June, I shall continue with it.
It looked rather odd, to first get a message stating that it had finished
and then telling me, it would continue.
