Minutes of C&C Meeting 2 June 1998 1. John S. opened the meeting with 38 members in attendance including four new members - Tom, Adelle, Alan and George. He said that photos from the mid-year luncheon (taken by Jeff) are available at $1 each from Ted. Gordon gave the financial report, with our $200 donation towards the dishwasher yet to be deducted. 2. Gloria and Owen thanked members for their Life Memberships formalised at last week's luncheon. Gloria gave a precis of the origin of Coffee and Chat. 3.. John reported on an excellent program from Czechoslovakia which appears to be almost identical to Nortons Commander (W95) but is actually freeware. It is called "Servant Salamander", and John will post its source in this newsgroup. 4. Owen has designed a search engine for genealogy , and has offered to make it accessible to any member who wishes to have their name searchable through his 'genealogy namebase'. 5. Elizabeth has lost e-mail when transferring it between mailboxes on Eudora. It was considered possible that it had been transferred to 'Trash', which may be configured to empty on shut-down. She has lost clip art from Works, but it was suggested that it may be in a folder in Office. Her problem with loss of hard disk space may be reduced by cleaning up the ~ files in the temp directories, plus regular defrags. It was suggested that it was always a good practice to keep 50MB free on C: drive. 6. Terry said that if you install Office 97 and have MS Works, there is a very strong possibility that your filename will be corrupted. MS has issued a file called "wordconvert.exe" which corrects the problem and also updates MS Works so that you can now save in HTML and Word format. It is available from "download.com". 7. Emil reported on a program called "CD Streamer" which allows you to copy from an audio CD to a hard disk in a highly compressed form with minimum loss of quality. He will provide further information about it in this newsgroup. 8. Gordon told of the problems he had to recover a friend's crashed computer and which needed a complete re-installation. He said that in the last couple of weeks he has had to do three "format c:"s and has pinned the problem down to Nortons interfering with Internet Explorer 4.01. The last re-installation did not include Norton, and Gordon has had no further problems. There was some discussion on Nortons, parts of which are incorporated in Windows 98. 9. Peter had previously asked for the cheapest way to get a second phone line so that he could handle phone calls and e-mail at the same time. He has made up a keystroke guide which will allow him to be on the net, with incoming calls diverted to his mobile phone. Charges for the mobile diversion are borne by the owner of the mobile, not by the caller. 10. Lynn has a problem converting graphics from one format to another, and it was suggested that Paintshop Pro, Graphic Workshop or LView would do this, plus crop and modify images. These are available from the PC magazine CDs or Tucows ( http://tucows.interact.net.au ). Mike said that W95B contains an image editor. If her "Works" is Ver.3, it is worth the money to upgrade to Ver.4. Members were advised that "Hypersnap" will soon be made available to PCUG members at no charge. 11. Leigh was inspired by an article in "16 Bits" relating to the Perl scripting language, and downloaded it. He wanted some information on using it with W95, and after some discussion, it was agreed that there were complications. Leigh was also interested in running AutoCad on two screens which required two cards, but it was suggested that he should contact Neil Moffat or post a message to 'tip.help'. >-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------< Neville Anderson - nevander@pcug.org.au * Keep your ambition within your reach, but beyond your grasp * Coffee & Chat Homepage at: www.pcug.org.au/~rcook/c&c.htm Archived reports for past meetings, with C&C Search Engine >-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------<
