Meeting 2 November 1999

Notes of C&C Meeting 2 November 1999

Coordinator Ted welcomed 34 people. Thanks were given to Wolff
for being an excellent treasurer for some four years, and who has
maintained the equipment, as well as cared for the coffee and biscuits
supply for every meeting. A new treasurer is needed. Susan was
welcomed as a new member and already has a link person, her
husband Richard. Susan has had a computer for some years and
is using the Internet.

Wolff said that the assets were satisfactory.

Wolff said that the Xmas party cost would be $16 - $18 and those
attending filled in a list.

John made arrangements re the Melbourne cup lunch of the day.
Anne G's husband is quite sick and sympathy was expressed. Jim is on
the mend and can receive e-mail messages.

The coordinator said that a demonstration bv Maestro was planned for the
meeting and that Anthony Glenn would be demonstrating the latest
Maestro modem called the 'Womera' in the teaching room. All were
welcome to choose whether they attended the usual question and answer
part of Coffee and Chat or saw the demonstration which began at 10.35.am

The first Coffee and Chat question was about Internet Explorer and Netscape
by Ted who used both and found differences in their results with the same
web page. It was pointed out that they were different programs and it was
necessary to test a new web page with both programs to make sure that
the results would be similar. Different results would be likely some of the
time.

Elizabeth had problems with the Profusion search engine as other panels got
in the way. Access was also slow. It was suggested that she close the
unneeded
panels by clicking on the 'x' at the top right side of the screen. She had
described "Favourites" as being one of the unneeded panels on the screen.
She was told not to worry if she closed a program as it was still stored on
the computer.

Ken described his experiences with "Partition Magic" and his new disk
set up. He had problem and had to use " Format C:\ " to sort it out.
He strongly suggested that one proceed carefully when using
"Partition magic "software. Also the door of his Hewlett Packard CD burner
became stuck. He was very impressed with the service he got from Hewlett
Packard including a replacement delivered to his door!

Charlie pointed out that the second hand computer with an Acer warranty.
at a store in Canberra was still being sold as new! Consumer Affairs was
notified.

At 10.35am the group separated with 27 people seeing the excellent
demonstration by Anthony Glen from Maestro. He pointed out that Maestro was
the only Australian manufacturer of Modems and their factory was just across
the NSW border and could be visited by anyone interested.

Anthony sent a fax from the training room to the front office of the same
PCUG building. He had already installed the new Maestro modem from the
beginning.
The modem has a LCD readout on which line quality and access speeds
can be seen as they change. This is a very valuable feature. The modem
even shows the number of the person calling even when the PC is off!
The modem even distinguishes two different rings on a single phone line.

The installation software came on CD-ROM.
He also demonstrated the " Message Link Center program which
coordinates messages. Internet access was also demonstrated with a full
installation being shown. In addition the inner details of the modem was
presented including Error correction, Echo suppression, optimal settings and
the intelligent settings feature. This enables the modem to collect data
about the best connection details for any site and then the modem made the
most suitable settings the choice for future use. Remarkable. During the
demonstration questions were answered.

Anthony distributed brochures and delivered a new, boxed Maestro
Womera modem. This was presented to the "Coffee and Chat" group for
it's own internal use only.
Anthony was thanked for a very useful and informative demonstration.
The meeting finished at 11.50am.
