Meeting 30 April 1996

The C&C meeting for 30 Apr 96 was well attended, 27 in
all turned up, that's if you didn't count Michael Phillips lying
on the floor gazing at the BBS. The biscuit problem from the
last meeting had been sorted out, thanks Wolf.

        First up was a warning;
WARNING: GET YOUR INTERNET AUP SIGNED BEFORE OCTOBER 96.
Otherwise you will get chucked off TIP. Fifteen or so of us got
our forms signed, and witnessed by Michael Phillips, who no doubt
enjoyed the exercise after resting on the floor. Thanks Michael.

A previous question, what is DPMI memory, was answered by
Darrell Burkey, it stands for Dos Protected Mode Interface.
Darrell also reported that the magazine APC indicated that ISDN
would work over normal telephone lines. Fibre was not necessary.

Ken Meadows reported that he bought 8 Meg of RAM for
$180, and then two others reported buying 16 Meg for $330, and
another bought 4 Meg for $95. The price of RAM has indeed come
down.

There weren't too many problems today, Kryn Versteeg was
still having trouble getting Kit210A to work, and Darrell was
going to help here. Ken Meadows still had problems downloading
bodies, but on visiting Ken after the meeting, I managed to get
the bodies, but am unsure now as to what I did.

John ? stated he had a 486 for playing games and doing a
bit of word processing, and wondered if he should upgrade to a
pentium, or wait till the 686 came out. This was a trigger for a
lively discussion on buying a computer. Advice was sought as to
where to but a computer, and Darrell, being the new editor of
Sixteen Bits shouted "BUY FROM AN ADVERTISER IN SIXTEEN BITS".

Wolf Lieske asked what Java was all about, and was
immediately loaned a 100 page book on the subject to read in the
next 30 minutes. We expect a learned dissertation from Wolf next
meeting on Java.

Paul Thompson provided us with a set of colour prints
done on glossy high quality ($45 a ream) paper. The photos had
been enhanced with Aldis Photo Styler, and the prints were very
good. We wish Paul well with his experiments. Another member,
following on from the last meetings query re genealogy, produced
a print of a family tree with pictures that came from Kith and
Kin, a program which is on the BBS.

A chance remark that the fastest speed one member had
seen on Netscape was 1.4k led to a very lively chit-chat on TIP,
the need for more bandwidth, costs, volunteer effort, etc etc.
For those at the meeting, it was a very interesting discussion,
but in the end we didn't have the information to make any
rational comments and the matter was dropped, no doubt till the
next meeting.

Derrick Boyd was missing, he fell over and injured
himself, been in bed for the last 10 days. Valerie Sturesteps was
there again, but didn't say anything this time, but it was nice
to see her looking so well.

With nearly 30 attendees, there was a shortage of coffee
mugs, and someone was co-opted to buy some more mugs for the
centre. May this complaint never be raised again.

The next meeting will be on the 14th of May, so till
then, have some nice days and nights.
