Meeting 30 Jul 2002

(1) Win98Se -IE6-Autoconnect. (Al) (a similar problem experienced by
Simon)
IE seeks to go online as soon as it is opened. Suggested this
might be a feature of IE6, to look fo recommended updates? How to
disable this. Simon has advised that each time he started IE6 for the
last fortnight it insisted on trying to start off-line. As suggested
at the meeting he had gone in and unticked Off-line under File but
there must be a another (registry?) setting somewhere which defaults
it back to "ticked" Off-line. Still need assistance to resolve.

(2) a. Microsoft Office Reader. (Bill)
Are freeware stand-alone readers still available for Word97
and Excel97 (& also later versions)? People thought 'Yes'. Bill has
later advised that he had downloaded copies from Microsoft.

     b. Mailing Lists
Bill also sought information on managing mailing group lists.
He had responded to me:- 'For my sins I am now managing a mailing
list. I have had no previous experience and am proceeding, so far
successfully, by guess & by God. I wanted to know if and where I could
get info ondo's and don'ts. The impression I gained was that the rules
depended on the server and the software used'.

(3) Transact/Windows95. (Barb)
The relevant ISP might best be able to solve problems encounted with
connecting with Transact.

(4) a. Problem with writing MPEG3 files to a CD and playing back on a
DVD player.

     b. The CD on Canberra Reflections (old Canberra photos) is
available for inexpensive purchase at ACT Public Libraries, ACT
Government shopfronts and elsewhere. (both Mike)

(5) Report on ACCC court case on DVDs. (Greg)

(6) Program on copying LPs to a CD - "Rip-Edit-Burn" - discussed.
(Derek)

(7) Suggestions for an ISP for a dedicated Telstra line in
Gungahlin? (Charlie)

(8) Connect 2 party Dialler - computer tries to automatically
connect to another number when switched on. (Paul)

(9) Transact.
    a. Report on TIP/Transact progress. (Allan)

    b. Discussion on appropriate period to sign up with an ISP while
waiting for aTIP/Transact marriage. (Peter)
He was advised that he could continue to use a modem connection
to TIP even after TransACT was connected, while waiting for TIP
broadband to become available through TransACT. Alternatively he could
sign up with an existing broadband ISP available through TransACT
signing up on a month-by month basis, while waiting for TIP broadband
to become available.

(10) Web site on research being done in Melbourne on Alzheimer's
Disease.

(11) Problems with contacting newsgroups.(Brian)
TIP newsgroups are only on TIP: some web-based groups require
a subscription.
