Meeting 30 November 1999

Notes of C&C Meeting 30 November 1999

Coordinator Ted welcomed 43 attendees, including Annie recovering from two
broken ankles, and Ian who was visiting from Melbourne. Ted thanked John A
for preparing the notes of the previous meeting.

Ted announced the sad news that Anne G has recently lost her husband Tom.
We expressed our condolences and sent her our sympathy and friendship.

Keith and Marijke are leaving Canberra for warmer climes. We said goodbye,
plus a big thank you for volunteering so often to help with C&C events, and
we expressed our very best wishes for the future.

Ted welcomed Charlie as our new Treasurer, and thanked Wolf, our outgoing
Treasurer. The Group currently has adequate funds.

HARDWARE

WOOMERA MODEM: Mike praised the Woomera modem, which he has been trying out
for two weeks. The connect rate on the LCD screen is 49-45bps. 11/99

OPERATING SYSTEMS

GUIDE TO WINDOWS 98: Peter recommended the book 'The Unauthorized Guide to
Windows 98 Second Edition' by Paul McFedries published by QUE, price $29.95.
He quoted the introduction which states that:

"The book helps the post-novice user to get the most out of Windows 98. This
is not your usual Windows 98 manual but goes behind the scenes where the
"Getting Started" booklet and Help files fear to tread. It includes working
with the registry, controlling the control panel, insiders guide to Tweak
UI, memory management techniques, system maintenance skills, format C and
clean install, getting the most out of your modem and also IE5 and Outlook
Express techniques. It also describes the system tools which lie hidden on
the Windows 98 CD-ROM. No third-party utility comes close to the breadth and
depth of what these Windows 98 system tools can do."

Merv guessed that by "third party utilities" the book was no doubt referring
to Norton. Ted M noted that a book which really suits you is worth a lot.

INTERNET

COPY AND PASTE FROM INTERNET: To copy and paste Internet documents into
Word, you can paste the Net pages into something OTHER than Word, or simpler
still, save the Net document as a text file. 11/99

SOFTWARE

MISSING REGISTRY PLUS VIRUS: Keith commissioned a Canberra service firm to
replace his CD ROM drive. The machine came back minus the registry, system
data file and had a virus. Terry had to spend hours trying to rescue Keith
from one disaster after another. It seemed as if the files had been
deliberately removed. Terry advised us to upgrade to W98. Experts also
recommended that we should always ask the repairer for our old parts back.
We commiserated with Keith, and resolved to ask around C&C members before
selecting service firms. 11/99

EMAIL OPTIONS: Following a family visit, Joan's Eudora program is not
working. Advice was, to check the options (under "tools".) 11/99

Y2K FIXER FOR W 3.11: Ken has kindly put onto a floppy, a Microsoft "fix"
program for people using W 3.11 whose "file manager" dates may become
scrambled in Y2K. The floppy (immediately borrowed by a member) will on its
return, be available from Petra. 11/99

UNPLUGGED SOCKETS ERROR MESSAGE: Esther has a problem with an error message
stating that sockets are unplugged, though they seem to be in place. Merv
will assist Esther with this. 11/99

NOTEPAD SIZE LIMITS: Joan H asked about the size limits for Notepad, which
were thought to be 64KB. Notepad Plus (free from the Net) is better than
Notepad and provides very generous limits. 11/99

INSTALLING IE5: Rod has had problems following installation of Internet
Explorer v.5. Experts recommended he use Easy Kleen, (which as it happens
is available on the cover of the December 99 issue of PC Authority Magazine)
to clean up any old IE files that may be lurking in the registry. He should
then reinstall IE5. 11/99
