Minutes of the Meeting held 30 October 2001 Herewith the topics and notes I received by 3pm Saturday 3 Nov: 1) Used computer - Greg 2) Nimda and IE5.5 - RodB 3) Agent and pdf files - KenM. From Owen: In case Allam M doesn't respond: Being unable to launch is usually caused by Agent not being able to find the temp folder that is set up to launch attachments. Make sure that folder exists in the following setting: Groups | (Default) Properties | Directory | Temporary directory for launching attached files. Owen 4) IE6 timed out - Jeff. Important advice : Read the instructions. After installing IE 6.0 from the current PC User magazine CD I had been having the problem of being timed out (disconnected from TIP) whilst reading e-mail and naturally and unjustly blamed IE . Mike indicated the problem by reminding me that I had also recently installed Tick from software.reallyeffective.co.uk . This is an impressive little program that displays and logs time connected to the Internet, data transferred and other statistics about each call. It also provides a "Disconnect" facility for idle time, set by default at 5 minutes. Time spent reading e-mail is classified as idle and hence my disconnects. I have now set the idle limit at 30 minutes and must report incidentally no problems with IE 6.0 installed over my previous IE 5.5 . I have also made a note to read all the instructions about everything in the future. 5) Digital video camera's capacity and downloading - Bill A friend had asked me about a "digital Video Camera" with 16 mb memory and how long you could continuously record on it. The consensus was that my friend had his facts mixed but that 16 mb would onbly give a couple of minutes recording time. I am seeking more info including a brochure from my friend to get the facts straight. Topic 6 ( Ted M) a. What is an Anonymous server? Answer from JS, AM and others was it is not necessary to hide your web page in an Anonymous server. It is for the paranoid at heart.and although it hides some features any expert can discover all about you. b. The Microsoft terraserver site has high resolution satellite pictures of some parts of the world eg Their favourite sites. As an example a picture of Kansas City Missouri was circulated. c. 'Dark Basic' on the CDRom of the PC Active magazine of June 2001 is a free compiler. It uses XTML to write routines to produce a good version of the BASIC language . It runs under a dedicated single (one at a time) window. Is designed for games. It is powerful with 3d manipulation of images and can produce sounds on your computer, access your video card modes, put a dot anywhere on the screen etc. It has no line number and no 'GOTO' command which causes many to get lost in writing a long program. If you want some fun in controlling your computer try it. Just type the words Dark Basic into a search engine and there is the UK site. You can download the free version. A similar and only slightly enhanced version is available for 48 UK pounds. The free version can be sold, given away and is unlimited in its capability. The language allows matrix manipulation, system access, 3D camera etc . The simple program below was copied and pasted from 'Dark Basic' from the first program in the instructions. That means that text can be transferred from any windows program eg M'Soft word to an e-mail and vice versa. Almost unbelievably the line below is a complete but program which can be compiled by hitting F4 and runs with F5 and then can be saved as a DBA (dark basic) file. -------------------- Print " Hello World" --------------------- The program of course prints Hello World on the screen. No Program could be easier to use. You just have to learn the commands and away you go. However it can only display a single window at a time which is not a problem. The only problem I have found is that the screen in most of the programs is DARK! This can be got round by creating a white page as a bitmap and loading it at the start of the program. ie. with for the example type the command LOAD and give the location of the image e.g. load bitmap "pics\bitmap0.bmp c Hymans 'old computer' auctions are held at Fyshwick every Thursday at 5 pm. If you are careful and plan in advance (go early in the morning and talk to Simon Pitt) he will advise you of a suitable item amongst many will test it and suggest an auction price. If you pay $11 you get a 30 day warranty so the item can be returned if unsatisfactory. There is however about a 20% loading to cover GST and the auction fee. d I went to Craig' Hill's house at Dunlop ACT last Friday and bought 256mb of SDRAM memory (Hynix memory from Korea) for just over $52.50 with a three year warranty! I have not installed the memory as yet but expect no problems Other prices from his catlogue which he emailed me are below. The catalogue is a long Excel file.
