Here are the finalised notes for this meeting: ============= At the northside meeting on Tues 31 October, I volunteered to take notes. Number of attendees approx 25. I can't remember who chaired the meeting but an excellent jobe was done, so would that person please "owen" up so that they get credit and even do it again. Following is a list of items discussed. 1. At the third stroke - TrevorF. Question 'who remembers the time announcements "At the third stroke it will be ... and xx seconds".' Were they on the telephone or radio? Answers were that one of the people who attended the group used to work for the organisation who provided such information. The information was stored on optical disc and and synchronised with an atomic clock and available via telephone (1194). I think that the voice was that of Roger Climpson. 2. Password lost - KenM. The query was how does one remember the login password for Windows and how does one disable and or view it. One can delete files in the Windows folder with the extension .pwl and then set up a new password or press the ESC key when prompted to logon and one would not be prompted to logon again. Pwlview is a program available from the net that will allow storing and retrieving one's password information. 3. TIP Internet Access - AllanM. Allan told the group that in about six weeks TIP will be using Optus in about six weeks and that TIP should then become faster than it now is. 4. Internet Explorer - Margaret. When browsing pages not stored on TIP she received the message "Page cannot be displayed - cannot find server or DNS error". Answer1: proxies needed to be correctly set Answer2: computer had been set up by an application or supplier to use a different domain name server rather than 203.10.76.34. Item 4 Checked with Margaret, no script set or available on her computer Strange?? Will go round to her when I can with a copy of script etc TonyS 5. How to download things that are within Acrobat pdf files rather than the whole file - JennyL See articles 1 and 2 in the coffee-chat newsgroup by OwenC on how to create pdf files. 6. External CD Writers - TonyS. Tony provided a report to the group about costs he'd sought of these devices and that they were available as USB, SCSI, and IDE. Available at Markets $120 approx. for Case Cd Writers to fit about $250 7. EasyCleaner and Me - JeffC. 1. Jeff reported and queried about EasyCleaner compatibility with Windows Me. Toni Arts of Finland has distributed an e-mail in which he advises EasyCleaner users to refer to the FAQ in his site - http://www.saunalahti.fi/tonihele . There it is reported that EasyCleaner prevents the "Help" of Windows Me functioning but that this problem is easily overcome by adding "Help" to the skip list. No one at the meeting had tried doing this, or indeed, had much experience yet with Windows Me. Some reported that a lot of other software is known not to function with W Me. Consensus seemed to be not to install Windows Me until these problems are all identified and resolved and even that it might be advisable to await a Windows Me Second Edition that may appear in about a year from now as happened with W98. It was agreed though that progress is inevitable and that with time most of us will upgrade from Windows 95/98. The MS sales technique was noted whereby there is a special promotional price for upgrades until 15 January and that the up grade from W98 ($98 in local stores) is less than for W95, suggesting that in the future an upgrade to W?? from W98 will cost more than one from W Me. 2. My report and query about EasyCleaner compatibility with Windows Me Toni Arts of Finland has distributed an e-mail in which he advises EasyCleaner users to refer to the FAQ in his site - http://www.saunalahti.fi/tonihele . There it is reported that EasyCleaner prevents the "Help" of Windows Me functioning but that this problem is easily overcome by adding "Help" to the skip list. Although the "Skip" box in EasyCleaner for the Registry is obvious enough, it is not clear what one would put in it to skip the Help for W Me. Perhaps someone with W Me will tell us! JeffC 8. Windows Startup Menu problems - RobS. Re : "MS Windows 98 Startup Menu" This menu would appear early in the bootup and required a choice before the bootup would continue. The following fix suggested by TonyS was applied and has cured the problem; START > RUN > TYPE "msconfig" > from the menu presented choose GENERAL > TICK 'NORMAL STARTUP' >OK. The computer was restarted and rebooted automatically. BobS =========== Thanks to all who contributed and listened to the discussion. As a side issue, KenM sent me a large Word97 file that was written by ChessK and GordonU addresses a Win98 workshop they did for a training course a little while ago. A problem for some people who want the information is that they don't have Word97 installed and therefore can't access all the information. I intend to save this excellent information to a rtf file so that people without Winword should be able to save and use it offline. Before I do that, I'll obtain Chess' and Gordon's permission and give them credit for the information.
