Dot RAM E-Video - KenM Up until five or six weeks ago I could view video news clips downloaded from the SMH and BBC news. Then, all that happened was a small file downloaded with a long name and the extension .RAM. The mtg advised that a RAM extension related to a video file an apparently the association to that extension had been lost and to check the program used to view video files. On arriving home I checked the association and found that Real Player was supposed to play video. On loading Real Player I got a message that the version I had been using was a beta version and had expired. I was asked to download a working version which I did. All is now well. Downloaded video clips now play as they should - I should have done this during the Olympics! 3. Slow Internet - KenF 4. MS Word - Change case - TrevorF Trevor participates in a Word tip e-mail list. Yesterday a handy hint about changing the case of selected text came up. Instead of selecting the text and changing the case in the Format part of the menu, all one needs do is to select the text and press SHFT-F3 and the text will change case and toggle with each press of that combination. 5. PDF/IE5.5 - CharlieK Charlie raised an issue where he could not open a pdf file from within IE5.5. pdf files work perfectly when opened from within Windows Explorer or any other application eg Outlook 2000. He asked if anyone knew how to configure IE to accept Acrobat reader as a helper application? General consensus was that IE did not give you this option, unlike Netscape, which did. A. Various suggestions were offered including "repairing" IE 5.5 (Tried this, it didn't have any effect). B. Checking the Acrobat Help files for advice (nothing gleaned there). C. Using the shift right click to bring up the "Open with" option, then using Acrobat. - (doesn't work, shift right click doesn't provide Open with option). Only workable solution so far is to save target, then open the saved file. 6. Shut down (not again!) - JohnK Problem now solved, I hope, must have enabled "fast shut down", this seems to have been the cause of the problem as have now gone in and ticked "Disable fast shut down" and system shuts down OK. First tried to adjust Vet settings but made no difference. How we waste hours over such a simple issue, should learn not to tinker. When its working almost OK leave alone, mind you will probably have the intermittent freezing of my disk drive so will have to continue to play with BIOS and Windows settings as I don't like to leave the drive spinning all the time, but works OK most of time.Return to the Index or the Coffee and Chat Page
