Minutes of the Meeting held 8 January 2002 RodB was chair and I volunteered to collate the notes. One person was in attendance for the first time at the north meeting but had been to the south. 1. Home Page www.users.tpg.com.au/bibo063. The foregoing is a list of past articles published in Sixteen Bits from TerryB. 2. AVG virus checker - JennyL AVG Virus checker. In response to Jenny's request, Terry confirmed that the AVG virus checker is updated frequently, sometimes daily. The AVG monthly download consolidates previous updates plus the engine. And as Rod explained, no virus checker is completely comprehensive: pretty good coverage is what you get. 3. Euro UK - TrevorF My younger sister posted the following joke: With the Euro being the currency in the UK the phrase of spending a penny is now out of date. Instead the term "euronating" may be used. It was mentioned at the meeting that "spending a penny" went out when the decimal 'p' was used. That term was used instead of spending a penny anyway. 4.(a) CD R?W as backup (b) OE using 127.0.0.1 as POP server - RodB 5.(a) Reading CD (b) Keyboard faulty - KenM 6. C&C3 - GloriaR. Gloria mentioned that the 3rd group would meet after the southside meeting at the same venue. 7. xxcopy - JimH XXCopy. Version 2.80 released 1 Jan 2002 Duplicates the entire system drive which can boot Win9x. It has similar features to Norton Ghost and is available as freeware and also a more sophisticated Pro edition. http://www.xxcopy.com 8.(1) Voice on net The Journal "Engineers Australia", Aug 2001,Pg 40, had an item titled "Talking over the net". This describes some problems encountered using the net for telephony, and mentions Interactive Access Devices, which (presumably) are available from Quadtel in Castle Hill, Sydney. (2) Win98 start-up I was not able to boot a P133 box after removing a failed 2YO Quantum Fireball master 6.2 GHz HDD and reinstalling the original 4YO 1.2GHz HDD. Several DOS commands were suggested. Due to a Win 98SE start-up disk incompatibility, the bootup was only achieved after some welcome phone help from Chairman Rod B, and a Format C. - RobS 9. Printer problem - CharlieK Printer Problem I had developed a problem with my HP 810 printer after it had accidentally become disconnected from the PC. Whenever any print was sent to it, I got a Windows message saying that there was a problem "due to an unknown systems error" and I needed to restart Windows and try again. I did that and got the same thing even after checking all connections and switching USB cables and ports. I suspected I needed to reinstall the driver software. Received a number of suggestions to try first, but none worked. Reinstalling the drivers fixed the problem. Photo Studio: I just wanted to comment on how impressed I was with its photo stitching facility which was very easy to use and produced a flawless result. 10. TIP changes over Christmas New Year break - AllanM. Allan mentioned some of the changes made to TIP during the Christmas/New Year break. Applause from everyone at the meeting for AllanM and JeremyB for the extra and normal work they put in to update and keep the TIP project running. 11. TIP connection WinXP - BMcKenny. Owen C responded: For instruction on how to connect using XP, either see or ring Petra or download the instructions from http://www.pcug.org.au/~rcook/info/ 12. PRO (public records office) - MikeD. "1901 Census On-Line Service The site remains unable to meet continuing levels of demand. The PRO has agreed with Qinetiq's technical team to close Internet access to the site for one week for enhancements to take place. Meanwhile the normal 1901 Census microform services continue to be available at the PRO Kew and local record offices and public libraries across the country." 13.
