Meeting 8 July 1997

For those that do not know, there is a give away table at the
PCUG Centre, hundreds of five and quarter inch floppies, one had DOS
3.2 on it, magazines, also a Racal Vadic VP1222, with lots of buttons
and LEDs and a thing at the back that said Datel Line, our resident
archeologist thought it was a modem, and dozens of MD/HD 12 MB Double
Sided Servo Written Disk Cartridges 78 Sectors/333 TPI.

Anyway, eventually managed to rearrange some of these goodies and find
myself a space to write on :-)

So came 10.30 am and Ted Macarthur started the meeting, Gloria
Robbins was laid up with a crook back, so we hope that goes away, but
sadder news was that Valerie Sturesteps was in hospital, we wish her
well.

Couple of new members, Bob Thomas from Ridgecrest, interested
in computers and wood turning, but the wintery weather keeps him on
the computer mostly, and also Joan Drew who had lots of questions, but
preferred to lurk for a while before speaking....welcome to both.

As advised last week, and true to his word, Ken Meadows gave a
run down on using the Internet Travel facilities to do you travel
planning. A Qantas program, quantim.exe was installed on one of the
centre's computer for playing with.
Basically, the cost of travel depends on the airline, class of
travel and the date. Using the Qantas program, you can devise yourself
an itinerary, and know not only what hotels you will be staying at,
but also what in flight movies you will see. All sorts of things as
well, including meals, maps of Airport Terminals, and plans of your
plane.
If you are interested in exploring this Qantas program, it has
been installed locally at http://www.pcug.org.au/~amikkels/qantim.exe
it will self install, or you can go to Qantas home page at
http://www.qantas.com.au which is under a major re-construction job at
the moment. The file is abut 900K. Thanks Ken.

Mike Dinn wanted to know how to program the F1-F12 keys to
enable short cuts. Bit of a deathly silence here, but someone
suggested using Win 3.1x Recorder. Well you certainly can record
macros with this, but I just tried it and couldn't get it to work, ie,
if it wont work in 10 seconds, then it's no good. Anyone prepared to
spend 11 seconds on it ?

Then we drifted onto some Internet thingies, and thanks to
Allan Mikkelsen for the answers.
Can I get a receipt when sending an e-mail? Well, yes and no,
depends on your mailer and the various ISPs, by and large it is too
much trouble, so you are unlikely to get a receipt.
What are these Anti Spam Measures? There are several levels of anti
spamming implemented at TIP, one prevents e-mail from bulk e-mailers,
another prevents TIP from being used as a relay from other sites. Most
of these measures are documented from the PCUG home page (info I
think)
What has happened to the news feed? Looks like there is problems
with Access One, 300 Mb a day is down to a 100 and alt.binaries has
been given a lower priority to help get the other stuff through.

Someone had problems with Netscape mail, couldn't read the
mail without printing it out. Someone suggested Netscape had run out
of ink, but the problem appeared that he did not have all the "panes"
showing, and I think he went away happy, knowing he didn't have to buy
ink for Netscape.

Printing guru Jim Hume advised that under W95, if you set the
graphics setting to Coarse, you get the best prints.

And then the piece de resistance, Betty and Edward Haughey
produced some fantastic printouts. Betty is an embroiderer and they
had taken two of her works, scanned them, then printed them out with a
HP 600 series printer on HP Photocopy, or Bright White paper will do.
The resulting images were fantastic, almost surrealistic, and while
beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, every one agreed they were
first class. Well done Betty and Edward.

Next meeting will be on 22 July 1997, so till then, all the
best and ciao ciao.
