Just a reminder that the Internet SIG has started again, it is held at the Centre on every second Monday, commencing 10:00 am. Anything internetty is discussed, as well as other subjects, like what do you tell the police when your car is stolen. You may have read in tip.general where Allan Mikkelsen had his car stolen. A question asked by the AFP is "Who is your preferred tow away company?". Next on the List can be an expensive choice, for when the police found his car at the Canberra Uni, next on the list towed it away to Hume, $175 worth, plus the taxi fare out there.! A lot of TIP type discussion, like is $120 per annum a fair price, this works out at $10 a month for 25 hours a month. What do other ISPs charge? This morning Canberra Times had a few prices; InterACT From $10 per month no more detail Dynamite From $1.00 a day or $1.00 an hour Cyberone From $5.00 per month (plus$2.50 ph) Netinfo $10 per month for 10 hours and 50MB plus a range of other options So it is a matter of shopping around and getting what you want. Approximately 600 accounts fall due this February, so don't be caught out, and renew your account NOW. On the matter of time allocations, please go to http://www.pcug.org.au/tip/warnset.html and use the form there to activate warning levels, you get an automatic message when your time falls below a certain level. This will save the other problem of simply running out of time. 203.10.76.34 ....................... have you seen those numbers before? That is the number for the DNS server, and it is this number which represents tip.net.au, pcug.net.au, and auug.org.au so to some extent they are interchangeable, but note , only to some extent, so it is best to stick to your normal domain name. Some discussion on credit card transactions via the net. The security level afforded is akin to sending your number via telephone, or writing it on the back of a postcard. Note that the PCUG does not intend in the near future, to have a secure server. If you have been reading the papers lately, there seems to be some considerable advances in this area....... so watch this space. Agent, the news reader come mailer has been sold, so what the future holds is merely conjecture at the moment. Anyway, on the matter of Agent, someone reported that he was sick to death of getting a couple of hundred items per day in a particular newsgroup, and decided to use the filters available to retrieve only those messages which referred to his interest, life is a lot more pleasant now. There was some discussion about Quicken, Money 95 and MYOB. They all seem to have their own little niche areas, although MYOB was pitched at the business user, the other two were real good for home / personal use. As usual, Allan Mikkelsen concluded the session with a demo in the training room. All very interesting. If you would like to come along, the next meeting is 2/2/98, so till then..............enjoy you surfing.
