Internet SIG Meeting...22 June 1998

Some three years ago I attended my first Internet SIG, it was
at Fyshwyck and Emil gave a rundown on how to use IRC. It was all a
"whole new world" then, and there has been a constant change since
then, Emil has always been at the fore bringing the new programs to
the group's attention.

So it was with some pleasure I was able to attend another
Internet SIG chaired by Emil. Here are some points from that meeting.

Trevor had solved a problem with Publisher 98 which reported
an invalid page fault in Kernel32.dll. There was a procedure to apply
and those interested should contact Trevor at tfrew@pcug.org.au .

Bill wondered what the acceptable minimum amount of free space
on a HDD should be. Given that the HDD was greater than 500 Mbs, it
was thought that 50 Mbs would keep you out of trouble.

Wolf had sent a message to all and sundry and received a
reject notice on one addressee. It is fairly important to read these
mail reject notices as they will tell you why the message was
rejected/undelivered. There is no need to send the message to the
twenty or so addressees again, just the one that didn't get it.

Warrick was still having trouble with his connecton procedure
using the script supplied by TIP. Emil said he would provide a "how
to" of a script installation that worked, so long as you followed it
word for word. If anyone would like these instructions, e-mail me as I
think I now have them.
Marion also had scripting problems, and wanted a copy of
Emil's procedure.

Elizabeth wanted to install Windows98, saw that 200 Megs of
HDD was necessary, and having only 76 Megs available, thought
Uninstaller was the way to go. It was explained that Uninstaller only
works on programs that you install after Uninstaller has been
installed.
Some discussion followed on deleting priograms from W95,
Regclean is a necessary program to rid your system of all signs of a
program. "It's on every magazine CD" except the CDs on the magazines I
buy.
There was even more discussion on W98, and it was thought that
unless you really liked MS stuff, there was probably not much point to
this new addition to MS's livery, although others may disagree.

There were several other areas of discussion, networking for
one showed that our collective wisdom on this matter was somewhat
wanting. Marion was after 2 x Ethernet2000 cards, apparantly an older
card. If you can help, contact Marion at wely@pcug.org.au

If you are going to install Paint Shop Pro, install Version 4
as it does not expire, whereas version 5 does.

Try this in W95 ... Say you have a Dialogue Box you want to
print.......Alt+Prt Screen...... Open MS Word.... File | Paste
Special and select what you you want , and there you have the Dialogue
box in a word doco, very useful for making how to Documents. Thanls to
Warrick for that tip.

After the round table discussion, we adjourned to the training
room for a demostration of the fully blown Agent News/mailer client.
While this was going on, Emil downloaded CD Streamer as mentioned in
Coffee and Chat a couple of meetings ago.

That was that for another Monday, feel free to come along the
Internet Sig and have a talk and cup of tea or coffee. It is on every
second Monday and the next one will be 6 Jul 98, and it starts 10:00am
