Internet SIG Meeting...28 Jul 1997

For those that do not know, an Internet SIG is run every
second Monday, today Allan Mikkelsen led the discussions and later,
the demonstrations. Great if you have Internet type questions.

AGENT
Version 1.5 of Agent has been released and is available as a
local download from TIP. See
http://www.pcug.org.au/pcug/services/agorder.htm
The main problem with 1.5 at this stage is the automatic filing of
messages, there doesn't seem to be any intuitive way of doing it, even
the HELP says, "let Agent do your filing" but omits to tell how to do
it..Maybe it is straight forward, just a matter of working it out.

NETSCAPE
If you put into the Location or the Open box, about:cache
It will describe all the contents of you cache. Likewise about:license
will bring up the license you clicked OK on so long ago. Note the
colon between about and cache etc. Does anyone know any other about
commands. (See follow up by Allan Mikkelsen.)

OPERA
This browser is built to "the standard", or put another way
does not handle the odd things found in Netscape (BLINK) or MSIE.
It has a 30 day , I think, life before self destruction. How it will
survive in face of MS give away policy is something for the future.

HOME PAGES
Who vets your home page ? No-one says Allan Mikkelsen. The
rules are fairly simple;
No commercial stuff on your Home Page
Adult material requires a introductory page
   No illegal stuff
If you put a page up that contravenes these rules, someone will
complain eventually.

GRAPHICS
What is good policy concerning graphics in web pages ? Allan
suggests it is really a matter of intent, for example, the PCUG home
pages has the minimum of graphics, a policy adopted long ago to
minimise page download time.
He thought that the use of say 50K map was a bit wasteful of
bandwidth, it would be better to have, say
Search NSW
	VIC
	ETC
	or SEE MAP (50k)

On the subject of graphics, I created a "GO" button, it was
about 2500 bytes in JPEG format, converted to GIF, it came down to
1400 bytes, and then I submitted it to http://gifwiz2.gifwizard.com/
and it came back as 765 bytes.
Anyone who wants my first attempt at making a button can get
it from http://www.pcug.org.au/~rcook/go.gif it's free.

What is best to use JPG or GIF. The answer is of course, it
all depends. JPGs are 16 million colour pictures, and are ideal for
photographs of people etc, but where there is a minimum of colours,
clip art for example, it is best to use GIF which is 256 colours only.

DEMONSTRATIONS
A number of things were shown, how to us the mailer part of
Free Agent, Netscape and MSIE book marking schemes, downloading files
and a number of other practical things best explained by
demonstration.
