Allan Mikkelsen ran this mornings Internet Sig meeting. He had in fact arrived rather early to see what could be done about TIPs outage. Unfortunately nothing seemed to be possible. It would appear TIP has only one communication expert, and he would be away till Tuesday. So it was on with the meeting and Mike Dinn reported that he had placed a .DOC file as well as a .XLS file, but was only able to download the .DOC file. Allen suggested that this could be due to the new version of Apachee being run by TIP, and he would look at it. One earlier query, could a message be generated on request (like the time warning request) to advise how much disk space you were using. The answer is NO. So you will have to keep on Telnetting to Supreme to get that answer. Allan pointed out the problems that arise when messages are Time stamped incorrectly (like being days wrong rather than seconds). He has one correspondent who is 20, -10 instead of +10 out, uses Eudora on W95, but nowhere does it seem to allow you to adjust the time zone, so does any user of Eudora know? If you look at TUCOWS, (start at http://www.interact.net.au ), go to Time Synchronizers and you will find a number of Freeware programs, NetDate and Dimension to name two. Get these, configure pcug.org.au as the Time Server, and your computer will be spot on, time wise that is. Lew wanted to know if it were possible to have a number of lines assigned as 10 minute lines to allow people to get on, get their mail, and then get off. The answer appears as a No at this time, though most people agree it could be a good idea. Other Queries and Comments A number of people reported on falling prices, Chess says this is due to the Asian meltdown, however, it appears HP cartridges are going up in price, 20% in some cases. Windows 98 is monitor specific, so if you have some strange brand you bought at a disposal sale, you might have real trouble running it under W98. Wolf had glued some shag carpet into the back section of his $10 speakers, and now the sound reproduction is uncompromisingly fantastic. Emil had converted a 1960s Hi Fi set to now play 78 records and was in the throes of converting his scratchy collection of 78s into WAV files for descratching, declicking and de hissing. We look forward to hearing Peter Dawson or Richard Tauber at the next meeting :-) Marion had deleted Eudora Pro Demo several time, and installed Eudora, but each time she starts it, the Demo version wants to start. It was thought RegClean would clear out this problem. Marion also wanted a driver for her CD Rom another wanted Colorado drivers. It was suggested that the best place to start would be http://www.winfiles.com and say, for the Colorado units, type in backup, and see what happens. Jim is about to get a new computer and wondered about the pros and cons of partitioning the HDD. The general feeling was that it is a probably a good idea and that Partition Magic is a suitable program to do this partitioning. A CD was presented that didn't work in the CD player at home, and trying it at the Center produced mixed results. Examining the disk carefully, scratches and a thumbprint were observed and it was thought that a good clean might help. And there was a lot more discussion, but after two and a half hours Allan called it quits. A good turn up, about 15 in all, and a good morning. Thanks to Allan. Next meeting 17 Aug 1998, 10am at the Center.
