IBBOTSON, GEORGE, the Rev., Curate of Holbeach to Rev. Cecil Willis
(Vicar) from 1750-53. The admission entry book of Magdalen College,

publica," aged 19 years, was admitted a Sizar. Tutor Magister Douthwaite.

N.B.-Rev. J. Gurnhill, in a Monogram of the Gainsborough Registers,
explains a "Translator" as being a sort of cobbler, one who translates

boots, oh! we shall simply gloat over them. A little manupulation from
our translator and you would not know them again."

                                Page 96.

Anno Dom. 1730-1" (Holbeach Register). Born at Welney, Norfolk, son of the
Rev. Thomas Jephson, he was admitted Sizar of S. John's College,
Cambridge, 8 Feb., 1711-12, from Oundle School, when 17 years old. He was
baptized 18 Oct., 1694, his father being Curate of Welney. In his will at
Lincoln which is dated 13 Aug., 1740, and proved 15 April, 1741, his
brother Thomas Jepson, of Sixhills, co. Lincoln, and John Jepson, of
Holbeach, and Frances his wife, executrix, are mentioned. He makes in the
register the following allusion to the recumbent effigy of Sir Humphrey
Littlebury, on a beautifully carved altar-tomb, considered one of the
finest specimens of its kind of the fourteenth eentury:--"In ye North Isle
of this Church near to ye Chancel stands an ancient Monument erect'd in
memory of Sr. Humphrey Littlebury, as appears only from ye Arms engraved
thereon. I imagine he was slain in ye Wars between the House of York and
ye House of Lanaster. Also in ye Middle Isle before ye Reading Desk there
is a Brass Plate with ye Portraiture of a Woman. But ye characters are
almost worn out, to perpetuate it read as follows-Orate pro anima Dominae
Johanae Welby, quondam Filiae Richardi Leake militis nuper uxoris Tho.
Welby Armiger obiit xviii Die Mensis Decembris Anno Dom. MCCCCLXXXVlll.
Cujus animae propitietur Deus." Wm. Jephson Vicr.

Both these monuments occupy rather an unimportant position at the west end
of the North Aisle, though the first was originally at the north end of
the North Aisle, and the other in the Middle Aisle. The Rev. George Arnet
had previously made a very similar entry in his Parish Register. They are
given in Historical Notes of Holbeach, pp. 55, 83, 246; on the last named
page is the present inscription given, the brass being restored and raised
to its present form as an altar-tomb near the Littlebury monument by the
Welby family (during the incumbency of the Rev. Arthur Brook, who held the
Prebend of Leighton Bosard in Lincoln Cathedral, 1868, till he resigned it
through continued ill-health in 1890). He died 6th March, 1740-1, buried
8th May. Stone now missing had inscription:-" William Jepson, March 6,
 1740, aged 64."

JEPHSON, the Rev., 1733, buried "Henry, son of Mrs. Waters, of Stamford,
and nephew to Mr. Jephson, 17 Aug."

Frances his wife, aged ½ year, 30 Oct." By Sibthorp MS.
Church Notes there was a stone in 1790, "Wm. Quarles, son of Wm.
Jepson, Clerk, and Frances his wife, interred the 30 day of
October, 1731, aged half-a-year"-this is missing also.

N.B.--This is one of those interesting entries of burials in woollen, the
Act for which was passed in 1666 for the encouragement of the woollen
manufactures. It was a very unpopular Act, and therefore was much
disregarded so that a more stringent one was passed in 1678 requiring the
Clergy to make an entry in the Register Book that an affidavit had been
brought within eight days that the law had been complied with. The
Register Book of Weston S. Mary, near Spalding, has a most interesting
number of these affidavits. The Act was extended to Ireland in 1733, and
was not repealed in England till 1814. (54 Geo. III., e. 108.)

N.B.-Adlard Stewkley, the father of Squire Adlard Stukeley, was uncle of
Dr. Wm. Stukeley, and was in the practice of the law at Holbeach. The
Parish Register- of Elm, near Wisbech, gives the following information,
kindly sent to me by the Vicar, the Rev.

                                Page 105.

 F. Holdship Cox:-" Marriage June 14 1687. License Adlard Stukeley and
Sarah Squier." There is also the baptism at Elm June 24th, 1662, of "Sarah
Squier, the daughter of Thomas Squier and Margaret his wyfe. As the tablet
in the north aisle of Holbeach Church to Sarah, the widow of Adlard
Stukeley, late of Holbeach, gent., gives her death 31 January, 1730, "in
the Sixty-Eighth year of her Age," tbe identity seems established, as well
as the reason for the christian name of "Squier. "Adlard Squier Stukeley
was a Justice of the Peace "for these Parts." He was elected a Fellow of
the London Antiquarian Society 1st Feb., 1718 (Minutes, by Richard Gough,
London, 1798, 4to.); "withdrew on going into the Country 1721." He died,
about 70 years old, in 1768. The Gentleman's Magazine, vol. xxxviii., p.
303, has probably this incorreet notice of his death: died June 23 1768
Hardley Stukeley Esq. of Lincolns.," "Hardley" being a misprint for
"Adlard." The tablet in Holbeach Church says "He died June the 13 1768."
 Probably a mistake for 23.
