PAWLETT (continued)- N.B.-William Paulet Lord St. John was the eldest son of Sir John Paulet, of Somerset. His grandfather John married Eleanor daughter and coheiress of Robt. Roose, of Gedney, Skelton, and Irby, Co. Lincoln, and it was probably thus that William Paulet Lord St. John became possessed of "the Soke of Holbeach." At all events the Soke being in his hands in the reign of King Henry VIII., it was by him conveyed to the King. He was subsequently created Earl of Wiltshire in 1551. He enjoyed several positions under Henry VIII., Edward VI., and Queens Mary and Elizabeth. Being asked to explain how it was that amid so many changes in Church and State in troublous times he yet continued to hold offices, he replied, "By being a willow and not an oak." He died A.D. 1572 aged 97 years. THE KING LATE SPALDING PRIORY. 1st Bound in lease with doctor Sturton and Sr. John Oldfield, Comondike S.
