*Through a mistake not noticed on page 120, the lands of Sir Anthony Irby
are added up as 122 Acres, on that page, instead of 59, as they should
there appear; making the sum total of his land on the next page 190
Acres; the difference is here, therefore, subtracted.

N.B.-The Parish of Holbeach now contains by admeasurement 21,133 acres!
This gives some idea how much Marsh land has been recovered from the Sea,
as well as, by improved drainage work, from the Fens to the south of
 Holbeach Town.

Briefs.

IT will not be without interest to close this work with a few Briefs often to be found in our Parish Registers, where they were ordered to be entered. It will be remembered that they were Royal Letters addressed to the clergy directing collections to be made for certain objects mentioned in the Brief. The Rubric following the Nicene Creed tells us when such letters were to be read in the service. A list, rather illegible, is to be seen in Holbeach Register, and some of them are to be found on pages 231 and 232 of Historical Notices of the Parish of Holbeach, C. Foster, Printer, Kings Lynn, 1890. We here give a few more as being curious and interesting items:- "Collected Novem. 1659 the summe of thorteen shillings and four pence for the parish of Metheringham, in the countie on a briefe, the money payd to Will Dickinson 21 Decembr 15, 1659, a receipt for the same given." (Searching the Registers at Metheringham I found there were two fires as given in the following entries:-"A.D. 1599 uppon the 9th day of July this year the greatest pt of Metheringham with the Church was all burnt downe to the ground." "The fire in metheringham was upon the nyneth day of march 1659." The Rev. R. H. Whitworth, Vicar of Blidworth and Chaplain of Newstead Abbey, has also kindly sent me the following extract from the Blidworth General Register which begins A.D. 1566:- "1660. Given by the inhabitants of blidworth to a calection put in for the town of Metheringham in the County of lyncolne the som of 8 shillings, 15th of april in the year 1660." "Thomas Gramer and Richard Horner Cherchwardiens.") "1680. Collected for the English Slaues taken by the Turkys the summe of 16lb 16s 0." "1681. A brief for Turkish Slaues collec. 71b " "1680 Gathered May 30 for a briefe for East Dereham in Norfolk the summe of 17s 2d." "Gathered for the lazar house in London lls 4d to Henry Walls Apparitor." "1681. A brief for the ffrench protestants collected 2lb 2s 2d." " " A briefe for the French protestants collected £2: 2: 3." Eight shillings and tenpence was collected by "A briefe for Drury lane in Middlesex, A losse by fire Losse 70,320 lbs. A.D, 1699;" and in 1673, "Collected for the Theator Royall and the residue of the property that was burnt at the same time in London the summe 12s ld delivered in at the Visitation." It may be stated that the first place of public entertainment in Drury Lane was towards the close of the fifteenth century. That was destroyed by the mob in the Riots of 1617. The site of the present Theatre was chosen, and Theatre opened 8th April, 1662. This, with sixty adjoining houses, was demolished by fire in January, 1672, and it was rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in A.D. 1673. G.W M.
