Grave No Date First Names Surname Age Comments 32 Nov 11 1898 Michael John MURPHY 3 Months Child of Edward and Johanne MURPHY
Young Michael John Murphy's Grand Parents, Parents and other family:
Both of Michael's grand parents were immigrants from Ireland. They were Edward Murphy (1827-1865) Senior who immigrated in August 1857 and Mary Mulvihill (1839-1912) who immigrated in October 1861. Edward was both a moulder by trade and a miner at Mitta Mitta Vic. He died by drowning when crossing the Mitta Mitta river near Banimboola a few months before Edward Jnr, Michael's father, was born. Edward Senior left Edward Jnr and James (1864-1958) fatherless. Mary married John Carmody (1834-1916) in 1867 whom together with Mary, reared the two Murphy boys. They had 6 Carmody children, making a total of 8 kids in the Carmody family. Mary Carmody, my great grand mother, is buried with John Carmody at Corryong Cemetery, in the company of Jack Riley, 'The Man From Snowy River'.
Edward (Ned) Joseph Murphy Jnr (1866-1958), my grandfather, married Johanna (Cis) Susan Crawford (1868-1904) on the 24th February 1888. Ned worked as a miner on the Mammoth goldmine at Yankee Creek. He was a butcher at Mitta Mitta, GlenDart and Zulu Creek. He was a miner at Glen Wills when his infant son Michael died.
Edward and Cis had 7 other children besides Michael, before she died of a heart condition in Mitta Mitta in 1904 and was buried in Granite Flat Cemetery with her dad, Michael Crawford (1836-1902) a well known pioneer in the district. Edward was the hotel keeper of the Bridge Hotel when Cis died.
Edward Jnr moved soon after his wife's death to Allan's Flat, 8 kms from Yackandandah, where he held the license of the Albion Hotel. Here Edward met a schoolteacher by the name of Bridget Millerick (1883-1962) whom he married in 1907. Bridget was my grandmother. Bridget and Ned had 7 children, my father John Murphy (1910-2001) being Bridget's second son. Bridget and Ned had 4 children in NSW and 3 in Qld. Both Bridget and Ned died in Brisbane Qld and were buried at the Old South Brisbane Cemetery at Dutton Park.
Young Michael John, now buried in lonely grave at Glen Wills Cemetery, is gone but certainly not forgotten. His parents and grandparents were pioneers of the High Country of Victoria. They were people of tremendous endurance who survived great hardships in very primitive living conditions. It is little wonder so many had such short lives. Yet many like Edward and Bridget lived to ripe old ages seeing many grand children born.
I would welcome any enquiries from genuinely interested people whether they are 'family' or not. As intermarriages have linked our families together, I would really appreciate any additional information regarding the Murphy, Carmody, Crawford, Walsh, Cronin, McMahon, McNamara families of the High Country of Victoria.
Terry Murphy, Bannockburn, Qld.
