The "Official Records of the Australian Military
Contingents to the War in South Africa", compiled and edited
for the Department of Defence by Lt.-Col. P. L. Murray RAA (Ret.),
Government Printer Melbourne, 1911.
This out of print hardback book of 607 pages includes
Nominal Rolls of all the Australian State (ie pre-federation) and
Commonwealth (ie-post federation) military units
and contingents which went to the Boer War. As well as information
on the formation and war service of each unit/contingent, the rolls in
Murray provide the Regimental Number, Surname and (mostly) the
Given-name(s) too - but sometimes just initials - plus Rank of those in
each unit/contingent. In addition, there are also comments by Murray on
many individuals. By itself however, Murray can be time consuming to
use as it lacks a proper index and many of the rolls are not in
alphabetic order.
References in the Oz-Boer database to information in Murray
are identified by the prefix AOffH: followed by a page number.
Information
in the Comments field that is sourced from Murray also has the prefix
AOffH:

The "Soldiers of the Queen - a Database Index to
Boer War Soldiers and Nurses as Listed in Murray" compiled and
edited by Dr
Robin McLachlan (Senior Lecturer in History at Charles Sturt
University, Bathurst NSW) while Australian War Memorial
Research Centre Fellow from 1986 to 1988. Published by the Australian
History Database Project MCAE, Bathurst and the Australian War Memorial
Canberra in 1989. The ISBN for the original AppleWorks file version is
0 947156 16 X.
The database contains the Surnames, Initials, Unit/Contingent and Page
Number in Murray. The major limitations of Dr. McLachlan's work are
that he indexed only names occurring in the nominal rolls in Murray
(and not others within the text sections) and also did not include all
the data provided in the nominal rolls (missing given names, regimental
number, rank and Murray's comments).
An alphabetic order text file of the 17,864 entries (there
are some duplications) in McLachlan's Index
to the Australian soldiers and nurses listed in Murray is available for
downloading as a 127KB Zip file.

it is identified with the prefix McLln:

Nominal Roll of the Bushveldt Carbineers
(later known as the Pietersburg Light Horse). Returns, South African

Date 1901-1902. Description: Bushveldt Carbineers. (Source: The

Wallace says that 90% of the 320
strong Bushveldt Carbineers were Australians although on Joe West's count of
enlistments from February to October 1901 the figure is 32%.
Annotations on the nominal roll suggest many definitely had forwarding

AJHR(NZ)
Code = NZHRJ:[series, year & page] |
"Appendix to the Journal of the House of
Representatives (New Zealand)". New Zealand's soldiers in the
Boer War are listed by contingent (Nominal Rolls) in the AJHR for
1900,1901,1902; H series, H6, H6A,H6B which give: name, address,
occupation and next-of-kin. The rolls are also available from the NZ
Society of Genealogists on 4 fiche with an index by Judy & Phil
Heapy (1987). The relevance of the AJHR to the Oz-Boer Database is that
the NZ rolls show a handful of NZ soldiers with Australian addresses as
well as over 100 with Australians as their next of kin.
The AJHR lists are not complete, and other names can be added from the
Medal Rolls (for QSA and KSA): including about 63 from 7th NZ
Contingent and 11 recruited into the Hotchkiss Battery, 2nd NZ
Contingent in South Africa. Most were enrolled in New Zealand, but some
enlisted in South Africa. Deaths by contingent are listed in: AJHR H6A,
1903 (15 pages) gives next-of-kin, particulars of death and usually
locality of grave, although bodies in isolated graves were reburied in
7 cemeteries by late 1905. It includes 6 names not in the Nominal
Rolls. There were also brief interim death lists in AJHR 1900 H6N (to
12 Sept 1900, no date/place) and H6E 1901 (to 3 Oct 1901, gives
date/place). Other printed lists (Rolls) of the NZ Contingents are in:
(1) Military
Pensions (Amendment) Acts 1901 No 53, 1902 No 59, 1903 No 31
(Appendixes), and (2) Roll of Honour 1840 to 1902, 'Defenders of the
Empire Resident in New Zealand' (Ranfurly Roll) compiled by the Earl of
Ranfurly, printed in 1902 by The New Zealand Times: pages 50-94; not
included in the version of the Roll of Honour on fiche from NZ Society
of Genealogists. See also Colin McGeorge's database of the NZ Contingents to the Boer War
