John Broome, is a former Chairman of the National Crime Authority, (the major national agency investigating organised crime).  He is also:
Former Deputy Chairman of the Trade Practices Commission
Former Chief of Staff to the Deputy PM and Attorney-General
Former Senior Executive of Attorney-Generals and PM&C Departments.
John now runs his own consultancy business drawing on his extensive experience in Australian government and is Professorial Fellow in the Centre for Transnational Crime Prevention in the Law Faculty of the University of Wollongong

John Broome will talk to us about:  CYBERSPACE AND CRIME

The internet has provided us with great opportunities to learn and communicate.  We can find a holiday destination in Mollymook or Moscow.  We can buy a book from Amazon or shares on the New York Stock Exchange.  The world really has become a global village. But as with any new technology criminals quickly find ways to apply it to old crimes and to create new crimes.  These can range from simple frauds to complex investment schemes.  In addition the instantaneous electronic transfer of funds which we take for granted is both a boon for international trade and commence and a  basis for sophisticated money laundering as criminal proceeds are moved around the world.  Many of the products which were the basis of the Global financial Crisis were traded electronically.  Computers and the globalisation of markets have created enormous benefits for financial markets.  They have caused enormous challenges for law enforcement and financial regulators.

How is the internet used to commit crime?  To what extent was the GFC the result of criminal behaviour, not just ineptitude, greed and ignorance?  How do criminals move money around the globe?  Can we really control global markets and protect companies and individuals from cyber crime?  These are some of the issues that will be explored in this discussion of Cyberspace and Crime.
